Except it was at a no-name ice cream / sandwich shop and I did everything from scoop ice cream to flip burgers and bake bread to wait tables.  And it was soft-serve.  But it was actually fun.  I started when I was 14 and worked there until I was 16 and old enough to work at the pool as a lifeguard.

  • leigha - was it as awful place to work as I've read?

hawki - ooh ice cream. I also used to fall bad for the girls at the local ice cream parlor b/c their arms were all bruised and banged up from the freezers.

  • Mames, yes, it was.  They had no regard for the law when it came to the hours minors could work. They wouldn't let me off to take the ACT test.  My supervisors were awful, vindictive b!tches who tried to punish me because of who my family was (but that's more of a small town problem than a wal-mart problem). They wanted me to work when I was sick even though I was contagious and handling people's merchandise. It was just an unhappy, nasty environment. I quit mid-school year even thought I was in the work study program and needed a job. I couldn't handle it any more.

This image came up when I googled waitress. I can't believe they knew what I was thinking.

That's right, ladies.  I sold boat supplies!

They advertised in my high school's career counseling office so I called.  They hired me right away.  Besides, the town book store had hired some kid who was my age as their designated kid and I knew he's never leave it so I didn't have a chance.

Sales Associate at Macy*s. Not a great company to work for IMO. I hated it. My bosses were prick$.

Kmart - I worked there for 5 years during high school and then on my college breaks. They were actually a pretty good place to work for most of the time

  • I think the most surprising one has to be KB at Harley Davidson! :)

    Lol, Burlington Coat Factory.

  • I filed and did misc office work at a Science Materials Warehouse, where I often got hit on by creepy 30-40 yr olds in the office & warehouse. Eww! But it paid great, so I worked there part time for 5 years.

    Hahaha...ok, ok...maybe I was just a lifeguard.

  • Not counting babysitting and mowing lawns.  I worked at a grocery store for 5 years.

    image

  • I worked at a grocery store too, but only for one summer.

    image

  • This is reminding me of all the awful jobs I had in HS/first couple years of college.  Between the ages of 14 and 20 I was...

    • a waitress/ice cream server/cook
    • a grocery store cashier
    • a gas station attendant and fried chicken cook
    • a breakfast cook at McDonalds
    • a lifeguard/swim lessons instructor
    • a nanny
    • an accounting clerk/inventory clerk at a local factory
    • a tour guide for my college

and I was never fired from any of those jobs, I just hated most of them so much I could only do it so long.  I think the shortest was McD's at 6 weeks, the longest was a lifeguard for 3 years but it was only summers.

I know of Knoebels too! But only because of that one weird lady who plans to marry the amusement park ride there.

  • I had a few jobs that didn't last long enough to warrant a Google Image, but included working at a car wash at 14, a children's librarian gig at 15, a summer of construction at 18, and a variety of gigs at fundraisers and parties hosting carnival-type games. The two that I held longest in high school were:

Yeah, I didn't know about that either. I saw a few people get married there, but not to a ride. Then again, I spent 6 years there so I did see some strange stuff!

I quit after they made me work returns the day after Christmas. I cried, like, four times that day because of people (with no receipts) yelling at me.

  • These were hilarious! Great idea!

My first job = I was 15, a receptionist at a hair salon. My first 'real' job was a waitress at Carrabba's when I was 18.

  • Well, SBS, their return policy is horrid! They wanted my first born child for an even exchange!

Yup, I started when I was 16 and worked in the stores for just under 5 years.  I was told in the first month I was a lifer and I laughed. After being gone for 3 years I came back and have been there ever since.
