Clicky Travel WWYD

Would you be willing drive 5 hours with 5 people in a small SUV (Saturn VUE or Honda CRV)?  There will also be enough luggage for these 5 people for 4 days/3 nights at the destination.  [Poll]

Re: Clicky Travel WWYD

  • It totally depends on who the extra people are!

I definitely need a "maybe" option.

My in-laws?  Hell to the NO.

My friends?  Yeah that could be fun.

  • An suv that small with that many people would make me claustraphobic (sp?).

  • It would be friends, people that you like.  It isn't so much a question of can you tolerate your vehicle-mates, it is more a question of space.  It would be 5 normal sized adults.

Based on my size, gender, and knowing the company, I will have to ride in back, probably middle seat back.  The trip would be from Detroit to Toronto and ideally we'd like to save on gas, tolls, and parking costs once we get there.

Five is just such a hard number because I think technically we can all fit, but it won't be the most comfortable car ride of my life.

  • I wouldn't like it for 5 hours...I could do one or two, but more than that is pushing it.

But when I travel, I like to be comfortable. Would you be squished, like shoulder to shoulder?

  • I think it can be done if people pack light, but it will be uncomfortable, especially for the person in the middle in the back.   Maybe if you stop to stretch half way through it wouldn't be so bad.

I tend to think of 5 hours as a normal ride now though since that is our drive time back to MI from WI.

  • As long as you rotated who sat where.  I'd be be miffed if I was stuck in the middle back for 10 hours roundtrip.  If they aren't willing to trade seats every once in a while, I'd drive myself.

Oh yeah, that is a must.  There will be no room for anything outside of the cargo area in back.

We would probably be shoulder to shoulder and crowded but not completely squished.

  • Hmmm....well, I guess I would do it only if I really really liked the people.
  • I think I would do it....BUT I am envisioning me sitting in the front seat.  I couldn't do the middle seat in the back.

My H would be willing to take middle back for awhile, I'm sure.  One of the people (who is actually the smallest) would probably drive.  She gets motion sick easily and wouldn't make it in back.  One of the guys is a total diva and would insist on sitting in front.

I wouldn't be miffed necessarily about getting middle back for the whole way, because I know that going into it.

Five is just such a hard number.  With six people we would obviously need two cars, with four people one car would obviously be sufficient.

    This.

If you really like this group of people, then I would do it because I'm a cheap-ass and like to save money when I can.

But if I didn't really love my travel companions, than it could make for a pretty miserable trip.

  • Hmm, I guess if you like the people going and you don't mind sitting in the worst seat the entire time, there's not much to decide.  Or am I missing something else?  Sounds like a no-brainer to do it and save money.

  • I've taken longer trips in those squishy conditions for less time at the destination- so yes for sure!  I did like the people with whom I was traveling, though.

  • No way will you get 5 people & all their stuff in a vehicle that small. Go together & rent something bigger or take 2 vehicles.

I say you get a small Uhaul trailer and hook it up to the back of your SUV and ride in it like they did on Always Sunny in Philly.

    Totally kidding.

    Hahaha!  Yes

My group watches Always Sunny, so I'll have to suggest that.

Ok, obviously this is the BEST choice. :-)

But driving from San Fran to Yosemite we had 6 people plus packs plus luggage in a Jeep Commander or similar for 4 hour drive.  It was fine.  Does the SUV have a luggage rack?  We wouldn't have been able to fit w/o one, but the crammed people was just fine.
