Finally taking the composting plunge this weekend

For some reason it's been very intimidating for me, but I'm going for it this weekend. I think I'll just use trash bin and poke some holes in it (this will work right?). It will be nice not to feel guilty by wasting food scraps everyday.

  • Yes that will work.  Good luck!  If you have any questions post them, I for one am happy to answer.  It's strange how much I love our pile of rotting organic matter Big Smile  It makes such.a.big.difference in the health of our plants.  The Aster in my front yard has a bloom on every stem, it's awesome!

  • Congrats! I took the composting plunge a couple weekends ago, eep!  I bought a square compost bin from our county's recycling center for a discount - woohoo!

We have a countertop compost matter collector (read: clearance cookie jar) to hold kitchen scraps before taking them out to the composter.  If you get one, look for something air tight and dishwasher safe.  I wanted one with a metal latch but couldn't find one that would work for us... Still on the hunt for that!

I also have cloth yard waste holders (like a cloth trash can, from Target's gardening section) in two colors - red and green - to pre-sort any greens and browns we have on hand.  That has helped a lot for me to stay in the game!  Otherwise we just dump our food waste, shredded paper, etc. into the compost bin and let 'er rip, err, decompose.
