Rose Question...

So I bought a Knock Out Rose bush and it bloomed, but then after the flowers died there is a round thing under where the flower was.  It appears to look like another bud, but it isnt, it is round...

DONT LAUGH...

But is this another bud?  If not, what is it?

Re: Rose Question...

  • They are rose hips. After roses bloom they create fruit (rose hips).  If you want to encourage more blooms, you should be deadheading your roses otherwise your plant will spend it's energy developing rose hips instead of flowering.  After the bloom fades, snip off the flower just above the first group of 5 leaves on that stem.

  • So just to make sure i am understanding you:  i should cut off the "rose hips" to the next leaf???  I dont wanna kill it...
  • Ideally you want to cut off the dead blooms before the rose hips develop. But no, you won't kill it if you cut off just below. If you look closely, there's usually a nodule on the stem at certain intervals. Cut below the hip, above the nodule.
