WWYD? (Clicky poll - tell me how crazy I am)

Okay, so I know this will sound a little crazy.  Two weeks ago-ish, I was put on anti-biotics for my tonsil infection.  It had an orange sticker warning that it might make birth control less effective (i know pharmacists and doctors all have different opinions - my last doctor told me there was not way, etc), so I had been taking them for three+ days when DH and I did the business, condom free.  10 minutes later, in my happy haze, I got the "oh crap" moment.  The next day, I also realized that I had forgotten to take my pill, and took it right then.  Normally, it wouldn't matter, as long as you take it the next day, but with the anti-biotics, I'm a little nervous.  If I miraculously end up pregnant (I know the chances are small) I wouldn't miss a period for a while, as I just started seasonelle, which is the three month pill.

So, should I take a test? I would have HAD to ovulate that day to get pregnant, so I could test mid next week.  I just worry, that SHOULD it have happened (and again, I know the chances are still next to nil), that I would spend the next three months pickling the kid drinking, and having seen the brain scan on FASD kids in my work, I would feel terrible knowing there's a chance.

Sorry so long.  Enjoy the poll :)

I would do the test only because it would ease my mind, otherwise you are going to keep worrying. I doubt that you are pg and a stick test is not expensive enough vs the worrying IMO. I have an IUD and it is 99.9% safe but last year I had terrible cramps out of the blue and thought I could be too, and worried and worried for a couple days. I finally gave up and bought a test, saw the negative, loaded up on Midol and called it a day! HTH!

  • You are not crazy, I am the same way.  How long have you been on seasonale?  I had a freak out moment about 6 months ago and my dr's office said the odds are very low.  Seasonale causes your body not to drop an egg and to not develop the lining needed in your uterus for implantation to occur.  Chances of getting pg on it are very slim HTH.  Oh and when I had my scare it was only about 3 weeks in so I went ahead and took a test about 2 weeks later and then at the end of the pack.  :::sending non-pg vibes your way:::

  • If you don't mind me asking, which antibiotic?

It's probably a very small chance, but I've heard of people getting pregnant while on an antibiotic and not using a second form of bc. Also, not to scare you or anything, but I'm on my second pack of Seasonique (similar to Seasonelle) and my first pack was anything but pleasant. After 2 months I started spotting and then had a period that lasted the last 4 weeks of the pack, no joke. I have two friends on Seasonelle and they had similar experiences during their first packs. I really felt like throwing in the towel at week 11, but since I'm taking it for medical reasons I hung in there.

  • Speaking as someone who got pregnant while on BC and taking antibiotics I would test.  It is a small chance but it can and does happen.  Don't stress yourself out and take the test.  If nothing else it will make you feel better.

Darn, I just threw out the bottle today.  Amoxocillan?? I've only finished the first four weeks on it,seasonelle but so far so good.  I used to stack my old one month brand occasionally, although I had a lot of breakout bleeding the first time I did it, any time after that has been fine.  I get a bit of spotting if I start taking it at weird hours due to vacation or anything like that.  My body likes the pill at the SAME time.  Hopefully, the next two months will be ok!

In the end, the switch wasn't really worth it, as now my DH and I have tentatively decided to possibly start trying to conceive as soon as Sept or Oct.  If I had known that, I never would have bothered switching in the first place.  Just the thought of only having my period every three months was tempting.  :)

Thanks for all the great advice ladies. (You are the BEST!)  I'll test this week to make myself feel better.  In the end, if we get pregnant, we'll be ok with it :) Chances are darn low anyways.

That sounds about right if it was a 10 day course of treatment. I wouldn't be too worried. As far as antibiotics go amoxicillin is pretty tame. I also wondered because some antibiotics stay in your system for awhile even after you've finished treatment, but I wouldn't be worried with that one.

  • I would take the test to be on the safe side.
  • I am wondering...did you take the test?

I would totally take a test too.  I am also a worry-wart, but I just had a friend go through surgery, was on antibiotics and guess what?  Yup, she ended up pregnant.

  • You're not crazy at all.  About 2 months after me and DH started dating, I didn't get my period and took a test immediately.  I was on the pill for years and I was always extremely good at taking it at the exact time every day.  Of course I wasn't pregnant, but it's well worth the peace of mind to have that little test tell you so.  Make sure you don't take the test too early because you could get a false positive if you test too soon.

And to make you feel slightly less crazy...I'm not sure if you ever come over to The Bump, but we have a DW girl who just got pregnant with an IUD in.  Anything is possible!

  • Thanks again ladies!  I bought the test grocery shopping with DH tonight, but will wait until thurs/fri to take it.  (That would be a good 16 days past possible ovulation).  I'm not feeling AT ALL pregnant if it helps :)
  • i might wait a little while longer to take the test, but i probably would.

on another note, my ex-boyfriend mike just got married last month to a girl named robyn..spelled the same.
