I think some of u fly pretty freq. I was wondering which airline u thought gives the best deals/rewards to fly out of Sky Harbor. I'm curious about getting a freq flyer reward miles card for one of them since once we get out there, we'll prob. be flying home at least once or twice a yr. Which airline would u recommend for the cheapest way out of Sky Harbor? I've been kinda keeping an eye on things lately & unfort. flights have gone up, but it seems that US Air is one of the cheaper. Is that right?
Re: any frequent flyers???
*warning- this may be long*
So, I have a two part answer to your question. There are two airports that have hubs here: US Airways and Southwest. Your best option for getting a direct flight from Phoenix to most destinations will be via those two airlines. Flying American almost always insures a connection in Chicago, DFW, or Miami; United a connection in Chicago or Denver; Delta a connection in Detroit, Salt Lake City, or Atlanta- etc.
That being said- I was Gold elite with US Airways for 5 years (meaning I flew over 50,000 miles each year with them). Last year is the first year I did not renew my status- because mid year I simply got so frustrated and fed up with their customer service and company policies, that I started flying other airlines depending on the destination (a mixture of American, Delta, South West). I am now flying Southwest on a regular basis- for several reasons. 1) The status differences are no longer any different between US Airways and Southwest. Southwest now offers a "cut the line" security line for their elite members (this is what kept me with US for 3 of the 5 years). 2) With US Airways- I just got sick of their "you need us more then we need you attitude. Now I know so many people who have a relative/friend/etc employeed with US Airways and their Phoenix employees for the most part are top notch- it's their employee's elsewhere. Additionally, when you charge someone $25 each way to check their bag- you should dang sure make sure it gets there, and in1 piece.
My favorite airline- American. I just hate connecting in DFW to fly to San Diego.
<end rant>
This is a very good point that I forgot to mention! Although, we rarely fly West....mostly East, so they connection doesn't really bother us as much. If we had to connect in DFW to get to SD, I'd reconsider and drive! Haha!
I agree with PPs...US and Southwest offer the most choices out of Phoenix. I too have had status with both and prefer Southwest. Their rewards stack up the easiest and are the cheapest to cash in on...You pay only $10 round trip on a reward compaired to $50ish on US.
I too also LOVE American but it is a pain to fly to DFW for everything. Continental is nice but they also will send you to TX to get most places.
I think how quickly you have to travel will determine Southwest prices. If you book a month or more out you can usually get pretty good deals. Sometimes they are more expensive, but they make up for it by allowing you to check two bags free, where most other airlines charge you 25-50 bucks.... Southwest also gives you more drinks / snacks then the others (i've found, but I am not sure it is always the case).
Southwest, you can only book on southwest.com, but the other companies you can book on orbitz/expedia/travelocity/etc.
