weekend getaways

Where are some nice places for a weekend getaway in AZ?

I know of Sedona and Jerome, but am clueless about anywhere else.

My budget is around $500 and sedona seems to eat that up with hotel stay alone.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: weekend getaways

  • What about staying in the valley and doing a weekend "away" without going "away" :)  We'll go stay at a hotel for the weekend and pamper ourselves.

Tons of awesome hotels are doing deals with the summer heat.

  • I like that idea, but this is for DH birthday, so I would like to get out of town for a couple days.
  • i really like the non-getaway-getaway! $500 could get you an awesome weekend in town.  But if you want to get away...

    - pinetop! LOVE it up there. so relaxing.

    - flagstaff? i've never actually stayed there, but what about a B&B?

    - a B&B in Sedona, along Oak Creek Canyon?

    - have you been to Kartchner's Caves (I'm sure I'm not spelling that right.) Maybe a trip to Tucson for that.

Does it HAVE to be in AZ? If not , how about...

    - San Diego

    - Rocky Point

    - Vegas (without the gambling? lol)

  • I was just looking at Rocky Point.  DH and I have been wanting to go for a long time now, and miss the beach.  The rooms for 2 nights cost about $300 which leaves us an extra $200 to play around with.

So I am leaning towards booking us a room there.

Will DH and I need a passport??  I heard something about needing one, but not 100% sure.

  • My vote would be anywhere with a beach! San Diego, Rocky Point, Lake Powell, Havasu.....

In fact, we're planning a Lake Powell trip on the exact same budget.

Yes, you will need a passport to go into Mexico.  You should also purchase Mexican Insurance for your vehicle- your current insurance most likely will not cover anything that could happen in Mexico.

What about the white mountains??  I love Greer and the area around there.  You can rent a cabin or do a B&B.

  • I also say the White Mountains!  Show Low/Pinetop/Lakeside area is one of my favorite places in Arizona to get away.  My husband and I love renting a cabin up there and just enjoying the nice weather in the summer.  It's a nice small town feel up there, and even going out to eat is pretty inexpensive (but not super fancy - definitely lots of mom and pop type places).  If you stay near the lake, there are fun activities to do on the water.  There are also lots of hiking and other outdoor options if you like that.  Ray and I would bring board games and cards and sit out on the porch and just relax, enjoying the gorgeous weather and the smells of the woods.

Here is a website that I have used in the past to find cabins to rent:

    http://www.wmonline.com/lodg.htm

It doesn't seem to have as many options as it used to, and the cabin that my husband and I used to rent a lot doesn't seem to be on there anymore, otherwise I would recommend that cabin in particular.  But there are still definitely some choices on there.

  • I think I found it! If not, this is in the same community and VERY similar to the cabin we used to rent!

  • Here is a better website with better cabin options for the Show Low/Lakeside/Pinetop area:

  • I looked it up and passports are def. needed for Rocky Point so that is out of the picture.  It takes a month to get a passport and our getaway is in a month, so I would rather not take my chances on the pp not showing up.

Skittle: Thanks so much for the cabin recs.  I am going to look into this tonight!

  • Flag is my favorite weekend getaway in AZ. I'd recommend the Inn 410 (really cute B&B) or the Monte Vista (historical hotel right in downtown). Near lots of cute little shops, a couple of breweries, etc. There's the observatory up there, which I've always wanted to go to, but we've never gotten around to it. And lots of hiking, if you're into that.
