Ok ladies, I posted just below about my bare root roses not really taking off and got a couple of helpful responses so THANK YOU!
But now I need a little more help! I was talking to dh who actually planted them and he mentioned that he left the paper (that was wrapped around the roots) on when he planted them...I am 99% sure this was wrong! Aparently when he took it off the 1st one, he didn't like how it "fell apart" and he figured it would just decompose anyway.
So now I am thinking this could be why my roses aren'r growing as well as they should/could.
My ?....should I dig them up, remove the paper and replant? Or would that put them back into shock?
Ug.....all I wanted were some pretty knock out roses....
Re: another bare root rose ?
I lift plants to examine root systems all the time. And I mean all the time! It's a big part of what I do. But- I also color my own hair without any problems... so it depends on the person.
If you want to try, do it on a cloudy, cool day if you can. Otherwise, do it early in the morning. If that is still impossible, do it under cover of shade, using a shade cloth or shade structure (big umbrella or tarp). Have a LARGE bucket of water beside you, and the hose, ready to go. You mustn't let the roots dry out during the process. The excavation should be done by water as much as possible to prevent cutting roots- this WILL be messy and create a lot of mud.
If you find that the rose is still in it's wrapper or box, lift the whole thing and dunk it in the water. Let the paper soften for a half hour or so, then replant.
Some people do plant bare root roses in the box, and it amazes me that they can live, but it's definitely possible. But they will establish faster if the roots contact the soil from the get-go.
My Food Blog
We planted them about 2 months ago, they have sprouted some leaves but nothing to write home about....Rose "food" was suggested to me and we will use that tomorrow, just trying to figure out if that layer of paper is worth digging up over....hmmmm
