learning to cook!

Hi, everyone!  I'm new to the board, and new to married life (the big day was March 27th!).  Up until now my husband has been the one to do the cooking, but since my grad classes are done for the semester and the school year is almost done (I'm a teacher), I want to start working on my summer project....learning to cook!

So, does anyone have good suggestions about what to cook for a mostly "meat and potatoes" kind of guy?  Any suggestion would be helpful!  Thanks so much!  :-)

Re: learning to cook!

  • Hello and Welcome!

I have a really easy and yummy recipe for marinated flank steak that my husband loves in my blog.  It's tagged beef.  Feel free to take a look!

  • I've added a lot of Nesties' blogs to my Google Reader so I can tag recipes I like and peruse them for later use. Here's an entry on my blog which walks through how to set it up:

If you're looking for cookbooks, I highly recommend The New Best Recipe and Cooking for Two. Both are by America's Test Kitchen, and all the recipes are stellar. They also always walk through the various cooking techniques used. I've learned so much from those two cookbooks!

myrecipes.com and allrecipes.com are among my favorites when looking for recipes with ratings.

  • I started with a couple of Rachael Ray cookbooks- fairly easy meals, and usually pretty quick to make.  From there I started reading blogs, buying more cookbooks (mostly regional/ethnic foods), and now it's kind of an obsession.

  • Just remember, cooking is a skill and like any skill, it takes practice. So don't get discouraged when some of your meals don't come out the way you hope, you will improve over time.

This tag on my blog has a recipe for filet mignon (which you can adapt for other cuts of steak as well) and lime marinated flank steak. If you like to grill, veggies are easy to grill and make a simple, yet yummy side dish.

  • May I ask how you ended up learning or teaching yourself how to cook? I'm interested in that too and going to move in w/ my fiancee very soon and want to be able to cook, make a variety of meals, etc. Curious to learn how you learned!
  • I learned to cook by making a lot of mistakes! I have some quick and easy recipes on my blog, and then some more complicated ones once you get comfortable in the kitchen!

  • Welcome! I'm new as well here and it's a great resource. I'm moving in w/ my fiancee in a few months and have been re-trying and re-learning a lot of recipes/cooking techniques b/c I want to be able to eat healthy and at home so I know how you feel!

It's easy cleanup, takes 20 minutes, has 5 ingredients and is hard to mess up. Try serving it with simple mashed potatoes or a baked potato.

Let me know if it's helpful and feel free to message me if you have specific cooking questions. I'm passionate about teaching people to cook while I"m on my quest (including my current roommate) so if you have specific asks let me know! I'm working on recipes and guides that can help beginners!
