Will I die if I eat this? (Mint)

I have a pesto recipe that calls for mint.  There is a patch of mint growing outside by my patio. I know nothing about it-- didn't plant it.   All I know is that it smells minty.  Are all mint leaves edible?  Or could I go into convulsions if I use it? Thanks!

Re: Will I die if I eat this? (Mint)

  • how long have you lived there?  do you know what it looks like through all parts of the year?

are you sure it's really mint?

Mint belongs to a very large family of plants, and many of them have a mint scent, but aren't edible.    Mint is very invasive, so if it's not planted in something (a pot, a tire, etc.) it will spread all over the place.....is yours spreading?

  • I've lived here for about 2 years, and haven't really paid attention to what it looks like at other times of the year.  The leaves are riged and I took a minuscule nibble and it tasted like mint, but maybe a little fuzzier than the kind you get at a store?   I haven't noticed that it is spreading, but like I said, I haven't been paying much attention!

  • hmm.....i'm not sure, it's very hard to say what it is without seeing it.

Mint leaves do have ridges on the edge.   But if you've been there for 2 years and haven't noticed it taking over, that seems like it's not regular mint......it takes over like weeds do.....unless you have it confined.

also, are the stems square?  they should definitely be square, not round.

  • There are many different types of mints. I have 6 growing in my garden right now. Not all spread. -- Most do, but not all--

If you could take a picture that would help me. I can't think of a plant that poses as mint that isn't. The other option is that it is a hysop. But those are often more fennel smelling.

  • Do you have a local nursery that you could take it to?

  • It definitely has square stems. I will try to take a pic when I get home and post it. I appreciate everyone's help!!
