Best NC Beaches?

DH and I want to do a better job of exploring NC this summer and one of our goals is to spend some time at one (or more) of the beaches. I always hear my students say they're going to the beach, but that's not quite specific enough.

Which beach area is your favorite? I've heard a lot about Wilmington- so we were thinking of going there, but I don't know much about it.

We're just looking for a place to relax, maybe with a nice downtown area to explore.  Any advice? Share your favorites please

Re: Best NC Beaches?

  • I haven't been but twice, but enjoyed it both times.  The first trip was the Kitty Hawk (in the Outer Banks) the second time was to Wilmington.
  • We go to Emerald Isle. It's peaceful and quiet, although the traffic can sometimes be rough in the busy season. Beaufort, Morehead City and Swansboro are all close by and have nice downtown areas.

ETA: In my opinion, Swansboro has the smallest downtown, but cute. Beaufort has the best. Stop by Clawson's.. great food.

  • I like Wrightsville a lot.  We've been to Beaufort, but it was kind of boring for our taste.  We ate a Clawson's and our food was awful haha, but I heard amazing things about it.

  • We like Kill Devil Hills (right next to Duck/ Kitty Hawk).  We had the same goal as you last year and instead of exploring more of the NC beach, we are going back to the same spot this year because we loved it so much!
  • I haven't been to the beaches by Wilmington, so I can't comment on them, but I love Wilmington for a weekend trip. Lots of places to eat & a great downtown area to walk around.
  • I love downtown Beaufort, it is very quaint and relaxing. I lived there for a year, it can be a little slow placed, but it depends on what you are looking for. There are good shops and restaurants. There are not really night clubs (at least when I lived there) though, so if that is what you are looking for I would go elsewhere. There is not really a beach in Beaufort, but the nearby beaches are nice.

We went to Carolina Beach a couple of years ago and had a good time.

We have vacationed with family in Corolla which we enjoyed as well.

I am not really sure I have been to a bad NC beach.
