Seuss Birthday Party Menu-What do you think?
Hi there,
I'm having a Dr. Seuss-themed birthday party for my son's 2nd birthday this weekend. I would love your feedback and extra suggestions on the menu.
Appetizers and Side dishes:
Blue Tortilla Chips w/ 2 types of salsa tomatillo and double roasted tomato
Caprese salad bites on a stick (campari tomatoes cut in the shape of a flower w/ mozzarella balls and purple basil leaves to serve as leaves)
Green Deviled Eggs (from Green Eggs & Ham)
Artichoke Heart and Raddichio Salad (from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.. artichoke hearts representing how the Grinch's heart grew 3 sizes etc....)
Potato Salad (from How the Grinch Stole Christmas..loosely based on Who Hash)
Main dishes:
Green Ham Sandwiches (from Green Eggs and Ham)
Roast Beast (Beef) Sandwiches (from How the Grinch Stole Christmas)
Chili Con Carne (from Red Fish, Blue Fish..the Zans Can Chili)
Dessert:
Cake
Special Drinks:
Cotton Candy Tinis--put cotton candy in glasses and people can pour either Sprite or Mike's Hard Lemonade in the glass.
Does this seem like a good menu? Any other suggestions? TIA!
ETA: I think I'm going to add mac-n-cheese and maybe hot dogs or corn dogs to the lineup too for extra variety..

the food menu doesn't seem very kid friendly, but if its mostly adults then maybe that's ok. i personally love what you listed, but i know most kids like the basic kid stuff ... chicken nuggets, hot dogs, etc..

We are only having family here (15 people in all) and there will be only 1 other child besides my little guy. The other little boy is a super picky eater who has a penchant for chicken nuggets, so I will have those for him. My little boy will eat anything you put in front of him so I'm not too worried about him.
It looks great! I just hosted a Dr. Seuss baby shower so I thought I would list a few things we did that worked well. Not that you need to change anything, just some alternatives in case you want to add/swap anything.
For green eggs and ham I made spinach quiche baked into a canadian bacon shell (it was a brunch). I also had regular spinach quiche and one with bacon.
We did yogurt parfaits with strawberries and granola so they were striped like cat in the hat.
And drinks were "Pink Ink Drinks" (frozen strawberries thawed in the bottom of a wine glass and people could either poor champagne, sprite or diet sprite over them).
Favor was a candy buffet with all blue and red candy, blue and red chocolate covered pretzels, and cake pops (with blue and red chocolate).
Game - Guess the book title by the cover. (I covered up the words on the cover of the books and based on the pics, guests had to guess the title.)

I think the caprese skewers will look great since they are red and white. Great idea!
cwheels82 you did an incredible job on the shower!!!! Wow! I am so impressed! I loved the cake pops and the dipped pretzels especially. They look so yummy! I like candy bar you set up as well! I think I might steal that idea if you don't mind!
I have some candy elements which will actually serve as decor. I have jumbo red/white/blue lollipops that I am adhering to the walls, and candy buttons that will hang as swags in doorways. (I had an idea to incorporate a Willy Wonka-esque theme where people can just pick candy off the walls..just like in the movie). I like the vases you used in your candy bar. I will use that for sure..filling them with alternating layers of red and white m & m's which look like the cat's hat!
I like your idea for a Canadian Bacon cup with spinach quiche. How did you mold the bacon into a cup? Did you bake it first, then place the spinach quiche in it and bake a second time?

Candy on the walls sounds fun! The colors will definitely be great for the decor too. I think the candy bar is what made my tablescape! And red and white stripes of m&m's will look really cute!
For the canadian bacon quiches, I just took one slice of canadian bacon and made 4 - 1 inch slits at the four corners (think 12, 3, 6, and 9 on a clock face). That helped them slide into the bottom of muffin tins. I did not bake the canadian bacon ahead of time. I just poured in a spinach quiche recipe and baked them at the quiche temp and time. Here is the quiche recipe I used, but I think any quiche recipe would work. They tasted really good and are a good low carb quiche option!
(NOTE: The quiche recipe is heavy on the spinach. I didn't end up adding all that it called for. I do think it being heavy on the fillings helped shape the canadian bacon though.)
I got the canadian bacon cup idea from this recipe.
I also found a lot of Dr. Seuss stuff at www.funtocollect.com. They had more than oriental trading when I was looking online.

I also bought my Seuss items off of funtocollect! I bought large banners, removable wall decorations, magnets, and stickers from there.
I'm going way overboard for this party, but I love to party plan.
) I bought about 8 Seuss toys off of ebay to use as decoration. I also bought foam board from my local craft store and handcarved Truffula trees (from the story of The Lorax) and painted them all. I also made spirals out of construction paper to hang from the ceiling. I printed out pics of Seuss characters and glued them to balloon string to hang from the ceiling above the food tables. I made lots of other things too for centerpieces.
I also have themed rooms. I have a Lorax room full of truffula trees and a handcarved Lorax. I am having a How the Grinch Stole Christmas area too complete with a small Christmas tree.
Overboard?? Yes.
I also do cake decorating for family and friends, so his cake is going to be a book with the Cat in the Hat's hat resting on top (the hat will be about 2 feet high), and I'm hoping to make some Seuss characters out of fondant to place on the hat or on the cake.
