Anyone in "South of Downtown" Area?

Hi ladies,

I'm still pretty new to the board, and I was just curious if anyone else on the here lives in the area south of downtown (Orlando). I was about to ask for a recommendation in my neighborhood, and I realized I wasn't sure if anyone lived around here.

I live off of Michigan St., and I love this area. I do wish we had a little more in the way of shopping and restaurants, but that will be improving (hopefully) when the new "SoDo" complex opens.

Any other nesties in this area?

I used to live in that area, in a condo complex on Michigan.  I liked it a lot - took my dog on long jogs all over the neighborhood.  I drove by the new 'SoDo' area yesterday, and it is huge!  I wonder how much those condos are going to sell for.

We live in an apartment in south downtown... right by the hospitals... it is an alright area I guess... I used to like it better before the crime got so much worse.... now I am afraid to go outside alone at night, which is why I convinced DH to let me get a dog- so I can be safe when I start running again someday lol.

I know what you mean about the crime. I am definitely very wary of it. I think I would be no matter where I lived in Orlando, though. Even the areas known for being really "nice" or "safe" are having problems, so I think it's better to be on the safe side no matter where you live.

For those of you who live in the neighborhood, do you have any recommendations of tailors or alteration shops in the neighborhood? I know there's one on Michigan and one on Pineloch, but I haven't been able to find any reviews. I think the nearest location I had actually recommended to me was in Winter Park, but I'd love to find someplace closer to go for routine stuff like hemming pants and stuff.

I don't know of any in that specific area, but I used to go to one on Bumby, just south of Colonial.  It's in a little building across the street from Petco and Barnes and Noble.  I only ever had simple stuff like hemming and strap adjusting, and they were fine for that.

Oh that wouldn't be a bad location. I usually run up there to buy pet food anyways, so it wouldn't require a special trip. Thanks!

I've just started lurking on TheNest, after much lurking on TheKnot, so obviously this is my first post here (Hi everyone!  I'm plotting signature, I want a snazzy one like everyone else lol), but I wanted to second the rec for that tailor on Bumby (I was just there today, in fact!).  I had my wedding dress hemmed there and had some pretty intensive work done on a formal gown done as well, and it all came out beautifully (quickly and inexpensively too).

 I grew up in the SoDo area (Michigan/Fern Creek) and lived in the Wadeview Park area til earlier this year when DH and I bought a house in Longwood.  I love it, though I'm sad about the crime increase too.  But really, where isn't crime bad in Central FL these days?
