Herbs & flowers

Do any of you girls have a tough time with basil? I have a bit of a container garden going on our patio (blogged in my married bio, Rockin the Rock) but my basil is kind of sad. I never had any trouble with it when I lived in DeLand. I had several types of basil in window boxes that got mostly afternoon sun. Shift to Orlando, however, and the stuff isn't staying alive. I'm using good potting soil, have it mulched but keep it drained (I think), and I'm keeping it mostly shaded now because a gal at the WPFM told me hers does best in the shade. I dunno... it looks sickly anyway. (This is a new-ish plant, just potted a few weeks ago.) My mom said that she's always had a tough time getting basil to last, too. So sad. :( Any tips would be awesome!

I've also got a bunch of butterfly plants going on the sides of our yards. Lots of different varieties, many newly transplanted from my mom's yard. Besides the standard penta, lantana, impatiens, and milkweed, what have you found to grow the best in this area? Thanks, yo!

Re: Herbs & flowers

  • Hi! I have my herbs growing in my kitchen window but the basil is sad also :(

Hey- we are both Casa Feliz Brides :)

  • I have a basil plant that is a month old now and holding strong. Just re-potted it today - here's hoping it lasts. I've also had trouble with basil and dill - especially dill.

I've got some lantana growing out of freaking control in my yard - so that seems to do well. :)

  • Ok glad it's not just me! My dill died and is growing back now, so if yours dies, just leave it alone and you should see it again in a couple of months. Still no clue what to do about the basil, though. :(

Yeah, my lantana is pretty hardy. I have the purple variety, not the wild variety that produces multi-coloured clusters (that one is actually an invasive, if memory serves me correctly).

Autumn, yes! I remember looking at your bio before - you got some great shots at your wedding - so pretty. :)

  • It's definitely not just you- but then again, everything I plant dies. Everything, that is, except for my sweet potatoes that I left in the pantry a little too long and started to sprout. Those sprouted like crazy (Eew!)  But the things I actually wnat to grow, I have zero luck with!

  • Hahaha, Aileene, just stick those taters in a pot! They'll make some very pretty vines, and maybe some more taters!
  • I might try that next time. I ended up throwing them away. I decided that they were growing simply because I didn't want them to, so if I tried to grow them for real, they would probably die.
  • I have a quite extensive container garden, and have one massive pot filled with basil...  before we left for vacation I trimmed it all down since it was a bit on the yellow/green side and when we got back from vacation it was even bigger and better... try moving your plant around each week to find a spot it likes.
