Relocating to Chicago- Tips?
My FI and I are moving to Chicago this summer (I will be starting graduate school in the fall).
Any and all advice would be appreciated; especially regarding great neighborhoods for a couple in their mid-twenties. We will be renting.
TIA!
Re: Relocating to Chicago- Tips?
Where are you going to school? Does he have a job lined up? If so, where? How much do you want to spend? Do you want to live close to the action or would you rather have more space for less money?
Chicago's a big place...better to narrow it down!
I'm going to UIC. My FI is looking for work, he just finished a degree in architecture. Looking for something affordable (under $1K a month if we can) in the city. Small space is not a problem at all.
I hear good things about Logan Square?
We're in the process of moving as well. We used apartmentpeople.com and they've been so great in helping us find a place to live. Also, the Chicago forum at www.city-data.com has been really helpful.

The job market in architecture is not good, but I'm guessing you knew that.
Yup. It's not good anywhere.
I would look into one of the apartment hunting places and have them take you to several neighborhoods to see what you like. They literally have a checklist of all neighborhoods when you fill out the paperwork, and then you give them your price range, # of bedrooms, etc.
I would say in your price range you would probably be looking at a small 1BR depending on the neighborhood.
Some of the rental places to look into: Regent Realty, Homestead Group & Apartment People (I had a BAD experience at apt people and would not recommend them but I know others who swear by them).
HTH!
I relocated to Chicago just weeks after getting married about a yr. and a half ago. I grew up in suburban MN, lived in Minneapolis, and lived in Orange County and Los Angeles before moving to Chicago. I'd say the biggest thing is narrowing down what you want. Think of traffic noise (does it bother you?), ability to walk to stores/restaurants, public transportation, neighbors, crime/saftey (obviously), and price. $1k/mo. will not give you a lot of space but that seems to not be a problem. I'd say working with a Realty office like Coldwell Banker is best. Realty companys DO offer rentals as well. Also, I personally choose to call the local police departments. Let them know you're new to the area and want to know if a specific neighborhood (have main intersections of the places you're looking into) is safe. I have found that they are VERY helpful and often give more info than I could have known to ask about. When you do arrive in Chicago, I'm always open to meet new Chicagoans! We live in Edgebrook (a north neighborhood in the city). Good luck! And most importantly: enjoy all the newness!!! Relocating has some crazy pros and cons, but focus on the pros!!! : )
