What's to do in Williamsburg?

At the beginning of June DH and I will be moving from northern Virginia to Williamsburg, so I can work at CW. We don't actually know anyone there yet, and have not been to any places outside of Merchant's Square and walkable environs. So we have found Aromas coffee, which takes care of my first need in a new place. Well, that and the yarn store, which I did at least find online if not in person.

What other places are recommended, in the "just spent all our money on moving" sort of price range? Are there any good mechanics for classic cars? Are any of the grocers better than any of the others? Are there any other interesting things we should know about living here?

Thanks ...

Re: What's to do in Williamsburg?

  • You're working for CW? I'm jealous. Williamsburg is a gorgeous area and filled with history so always something to go visit - museums, battlefields, etc. The best shopping is at Prime 1 Outlets on Richmond Rd. plus Williamsburg Pottery is pretty neat - very eclectic mix of shops. There is a small string of restaurants near Coleman Bridge/Yorktown Battlefield area that is very neat to look into. Busch Gardens is of course nearby if you love amusement parks and Virginia Beach is about 45-60 minutes away - I highly advise taking Monitor-Merrimac BT over the Hampton Roads BT any day of the week. HRBT is a traffic nightmare.  Newport News/Hampton seems to offer the most as far as night life goes if that is something you're looking for.

As far as grocery stores go - it's pretty much the same as NOVA I believe. I think there is even a Ukrop's somewhere in the area, Wal-Mart is of course an old stand-by and I tend to prefer Farm Fresh over Food Lion as far as produce quality. Harris Teeter ranks up there as well.

If you like Polish food; there is a tiny shop run by some immigrants from Poland with the real deal in there. It is a bit pricier than the average grocery store but then again it is a specialty shop. That is located off a sidestreet on Bypass Way across from Cracker Barrel in a small shopping center.

Just have fun driving around and exploring the area when you get into town!!
