Our new house has a very large, very old rose bush on one side of the front porch. It's a climber, completely covering a 12ft. X 6ft. trellis. It's more than 16 years old (the previous owner of the house said it was there when she bought the place).
It is absolutely beautiful, it has at least 200 deep redish purple blooms on it right now, it's incredible. You should see some of the old wood... looks like tree branches it's so thick.
But, I'm scared to death of it. What do I do with it?? It's in desperate need of a haircut but I'm scared to hurt it. The only roses I've ever dealt with are my mom's knockouts and those are so easy... we just cut them back and mulched before winter. Am I even supposed to prune this climber at all?
Advice? Any good resources you can point me to?

Re: rose experts?
Well, I have found a lot of info googling. That was my first stop
However, there is a lot of conflicting info on pruning climbers... multiple schools of thought I should say... Was looking for personal experience.
And maybe any specific resources people like... books, sites, etc.

I have a climber but its only a year old. I had just a few blooms last year and I trimmed off the blooms when they were done.
This year I have a million blooms a branch. I'm pretty impressed LOL
