Mini-Vent

A while back my SIL and her FI asked DH and I if we would be interested in splitting the cost of a large screen tv for his parents for their 50th wedding anniversary.  We said "let us know" and that was the last we heard of it.

I wasn't the biggest fan of getting them a tv since his mom doesn't watch much, just his dad, but they're not my parents so I let them figure it out.  Plus, these things can be expensive.

Fast forward to today.  DH gets a text that the FI just picked one up (anni is this weekend) and that's all we know.  I seriously hope the thing isn't too expensive or they may be getting payments in installments.  I would have like us to have shad ome sort of input before officially saying yes!  Guess we should have been more clear.

Ok, mini-vent over.  I know my issue is really nothing compared to others on here, I just had to get it out since I don't really want to vent too much to DH about it.  ;-)

Re: Mini-Vent

  • That does suck considering a TV is a big expense!  It would have been nice to get a call saying, hey I found one for this much $$ could you do half?

  • For such a large purchase, they should have talked to you before buying it.  I would be a little peeved.

    ps - HI!!

  • I feel your frustration and would definitely be annoyed too.  DH's sister has gone ahead and done things like this before and really put us in a bad situation.  Because she is single, she feels that everyone should spend the same amount as her on their parents for everything, forgetting that all of her siblings have their spouses side to buy things for as well.

  • Vent away, no matter the "size"!

I agree with Ang, they should have called you before they bought it.  That was pretty thoughtless and rude on their end.

  • If something like that happened to me, my vent would not be mini!

I always tell DH's siblings, 'sure - this is what our budget is and the max we can spend'. That way, there's no surprise expectations anymore.

  • Vent away.  I hate group gifts too, because they always seem to turn out like this with DH's sisters.  They always want to do some big elaborate thing, and then we end up going halvsies with SIL1 because SIL2 never has any money (for anything besides new clothes and going out every night anyway!)  but of course it's always from "all" of us.  Blah.

I'm sorry they couldn't at least call you and let you know the price range they were thinking!
