Re: Concord, MA bans water bottles!

  • I don't think this is the right course of action.  Banning the sale of something people want (like Prohibition) usually doesn't work out well.  The public needs to be educated about why bottled water is harmful to th environment, and recycling opportunities should be more plentiful.  I for one would much rather be able to buy bottled water on a car trip, now everyone in Concord is going to drink soda.  That's not a good thing either.

  • we recently had a major water main break here in the boston area/suburbs. many towns were affected. had to boil water, etc for a few days. but they weren't sure how long it would last. Concord wasn't affected but they were going nuts about it because of the impending ban, using that as a reason not to let the ban happen. I still think it is a great idea! it's a bit over the top, but it is unfortunately going to come down to stuff like this more and more, for the greater good.

  • I'm with SG on this.  Demonizing and banning one product isn't going to solve the world's waste problems.  It seems kind of abitrary, like why not ban sandwich bags instead?

I use bottled water rarely, but I do it.  I make a point to reuse or recycle the bottles, even if it means carrying it while the people around me toss theirs in the trash.  What about stuff like distilled water, which you can't get from the tap but is useful for certain purposes?

I'm not a fan of the big buisness that water bottling/ manufacturing has become, and believe their hearts are in the right place with the ban, but I think this issue should be approached differently.

  • Wow. Interesting. I find it very strange that plastic soda bottles are okay though. I think sometimes drastic measures make people make a change they wouldn't have otherwise, but this...I'm not so sure.
