Follow up to Derky the animal whisperer--bad story

So, over the weekend, one of our neighbors yells to us, "hey, what'd you do to that goose?"  We're like, um, what are you talking about?  Yeah, there was a dead goose along our bank of the pond.  We couldn't see it because the pond had flooded from the rain and so there was a bit of a bog from our side--so I had to go through nasty mud with a pool skimmer get that goose out of the water.  Not only was it as heavy as it looked, but that sucker smelled to all heck and had a boatload of flies and such eating off him.  Guess who got to dispose of the goose?  You got it, Derky the animal whisperer.  I thought double bagging and then throwing in the garbage can would work--uh uh.  I had to call the city to come and get it because our whole carport was WREAKING.  Nasty. It appeared that his neck was broken, but I couldn't tell if it was another goose that got it, the fox, or if it just died of natural causes and the necks don't go into rigor mortise like the rest of the body does.

The good thing in this whole story is that I haven't seen any of the usual "families" of geese around that's short an adult.  My hope is that he was a loner.  He was tagged, so we did submit this information to the proper authorities.

  • Wow.  You are just having all kinds of luck with animals here lately!  You go girl for going to get it, I think that goose would have just stayed in the pond - ICK.

I wonder how it's neck was broken?  I was thinking maybe it was hit by a car, but how far is your pond from a road?  My MIL has a pond behind her house and the geese always walk through her yard - you have to watch your step.

  • hmm, I wonder what happened to it.
