Poll: coming out
Hey y'all. I just got back from a work trip where I was sick with the flu the entire time. ugh. Since it appears I've missed nothin whilst gone, I thought I'd make up a poll. I was reading this afterellen article and thinking about the times I choose to come out, or not, or wait. I interact with a lot of strangers through my job so it's something I think about quite a bit. So, a poll:

When was the last time you came out to someone? I can't remember...I'm such a bad poll-maker.
When was the last time someone assumed you were straight, and you didn't correct them? The airport shuttle driver in Denver. He asked if I was married, I said yes. When he asked if my husband and I had kids, I just said "not yet" and felt very guilty.
Did getting married change how out you are? Not really. I'm out to just about everyone I know. It does make it easier for people to assume I'm straight which irritates me.
Who's your favorite out celebrity? I'm not sure, too many to choose from. I do adore Jane Lynch though.
What celebrity do you wish would just come out already? I am stealing Berries answer because I can't think of anyone right now :-)
When was the last time you came out to someone? A few weeks ago. We were enrolling LMC is preschool and needed to know we were welcome.
When was the last time someone assumed you were straight, and you didn't correct them? Last week. A little old man oohed and ahhed over the girls and then asked about my husband. I felt hideous for not being honest but I think it might have killed him.
Did getting married change how out you are? Not too much for me but it did for DW. She is a lot more open now.

What celebrity do you wish would just come out already? None. Straight celebrities dont need to make a public declaration of thier sexuality so why do gay ones? I mean, its nice when celebrities live thier lives openly and without shame, but i'm over the big "coming out" thing.
When was the last time you came out to someone? A couple weeks ago I met some attorneys face-to-face for the first time after working with them for years. They noticed pictures in my office so the convo came up.
When was the last time someone assumed you were straight, and you didn't correct them? At the salon last month - it felt so yucky. People are always doing this when i'm out w/ the kids but if I dont correct them, Sprout will! lol
Did getting married change how out you are? Not really, but for some reason it makes it a little easier to be out to strangers - i think its b/c of the wording. "Girlfriend", "Partner", and "Fiance" always felt weird to me...i just didnt like any of them, they didnt feel like they fit what we were. Theres just something about "wife" that feels good and comfortable and it rolls off my tounge a lot easier

Who's your favorite out celebrity?Ellen, I guess. I just love that it was such a HUGE issue 14 years ago and now it isn't.
What celebrity do you wish would just come out already? I don't know. I haven't really kept up with the rumors of who is supposedly in the closet. I just would like people to feel comfortable being able to be themselves.
When was the last time you came out to someone? I have no idea. It happens so often now. When we are out and about, the kids call me Mommy and then in conversation with them I'll talk about Mom. So either people think I talk about myself in the 3rd person or get that they have 2 moms. But at their b-day party a few weeks ago, it was like a big coming out. We hadn't met a lot of their classmates parents and they kept saying, "which of you are their mom?" LOL.
When was the last time someone assumed you were straight, and you didn't correct them? It happens at work all of the time with my clients. I have pictures of the kids on a huge bulletin board above my desk and people will ask if my husband and I want more kids. I don't correct them or engage them in further conversation about my personal life. But then again, if they ask about our wedding picture, I tell them who it is.
Did getting married change how out you are?No. We were out before our wedding. And well, we've been married 7.5 years now. But having kids outs you ALL OF THE TIME.

When was the last time you came out to someone? Today, just met a new co-worker who will be working with me. With all the pictures of the kiddos around my cube and those put up by my co-workers, it would have only of been a matter of time.
When was the last time someone assumed you were straight, and you didn't correct them? A nurse at an appointment that C and I were at for the babies............ARGH!
Did getting married change how out you are? No, C changed how out I am. I was "somewhat" closeted (though it is so easy to tell) until C. She freed me in so many ways. I could never thank her enough.
