Towns Near ODU

I was looking to get some information on towns near ODU that you would suggest to be good for families with young kids.

My husband has an interview at the school and depending on how it goes we may be relocating from NJ to there and know nothing of the area.

I was look for an area with good schools, hopefully a center of town and activities for kids (family friendly).

TIA!

Re: Towns Near ODU

  • If you are referring to Old Dominion Univeristy in Norfolk than I have lots of advice.  I have lived in Hampton Roads (the seven cities) my whole life.  ODU is actually right down the street from my office.  Norfolk is part of Hampton Roads and it really all should be considered one city cuz most ppl around here see it that way.  Virginia Beach is very nice, has the beach, a town center, lots of nice neighborhoods, Norfolk is a little more urban but still nice, Chesapeake and Suffolk are the "suburban" parts of HR.  They are little more expensive to live it but are considered nicer/safer....however going to far out into Ches and Suffolk can get downright rural.  Hope this is a start....my little girl always has plenty to do...festivals, zoo, museums, etc.

If you have anymore questions, I would be glad to help.

  • I would suggest checking out where the bridges are located in relation to where you are looking to move.  The traffic across some of the bridges here can be HORRIBLE, turning a 25 min. commute into an hour or more.  Just something to think about when you are looking for places to live.
  • One thing you will notice if you move down here is that a TON of people are from NJ and NY :)

I live in Virginia Beach and would rather live here than any of the other areas of Hampton Roads.  I live near the Kempsville area of VB, right off 64 and it's within 20 minutes of pretty much everything I'd want to go to regularly, including ODU and there's no bridges on my routes.

  • Some of the nicest areas close to ODU in Norfolk are Larchmont and Ghent neighborhoods.  Colonial Place has some good areas (I'd stay on the streets that are named after states Big Smile).
