need help w/ moving an orchid, please!

Hi girls, I'm getting ready to move from FL to Chicago. It will be a 3 day drive and I'm concerned about my orchid (a Phalaenopsis).  It's well establlished in a large pot. We're towing my car behind the moving van and I'm wondering if I should strap it into my car or put it in the back of the van? I'm concerned about it being way too hot.  If I put it in my car, I could crack a window for some air circulation.  Should I bring it into our hotel room at night? Any tips would be much appreciated! TIA!

Re: need help w/ moving an orchid, please!

  • i think orchids generally grow in the tropics, so I don't think heat will be a huge issue, especially for a well established plant.  Of course, your plant is accustomed to temperatues in which you live, so I would suggest putting it into your own car and taking it inside at night.  We just moved too (not very far though) and moved 3 orchids, including a blooming Phalaenopsis that my husband treats like a member of the family (it's on it's 3rd blooming round since we got it and he loves it).

Instead of strapping it in, you could get a shallow cardboard box and cut a whole in it the width of the pot.  Put the plant into the hole and it should keep the pot from tipping sideways as long as the box is generally on a flat surface, ie the back seat of your car or on the floor behind one of the chairs.

    HTH!
