Possibly Relocation to Franklin area...

Hi everyone,

My husband and I might be relocating to the Franklin area this year. Does anyone know this area? Could you ladies give me some pro's and con's of living there or in that area? Any recommendations on where to live that is about 20-25 minutes from there?

Thanks!

Sarah

    Pros:
    *Beautiful community
    *Tons of restaurants
    *Good schools
*Less than 30 minute drive to downtown Nashville

    Cons:
*High property taxes and cost of living (compared to the surrounding area)
*the area was hit pretty hard by the flood (buying a house - definitely be on the lookout for mold!)

For area's that are within 20-25 minutes away that I'd recommend - Spring Hill, Brentwood, Bellevue (Nashville), Nolensville.

Brentwood and Nolensville are in the same county - property taxes will be high and the cost of living is still a little higher than the surrounding areas.

Spring Hill was a fast growing community when Saturn was built and has slowed down since the GM plant there closed. The schools are good, the area is quiet. In the 3 years I've lived in Tennessee, the area has built up quite a bit. I don't think this will change anytime soon.

Bellevue is one of the safer, more affordable areas in Nashville. I know a ton of people who live in that area that love it.

  • I disagree on the taxes being high... our property tax in TN is the same as our house in Mass and they had the same appraised value, except now I don't pay income tax, etc.

Certain 'hoods were hit hard by the floods but not all of them by any means. Your realtor can tell you which one.

  • Also, property taxes are actually higher in Davidson county (Nashville) than Williamson County (Franklin and Brentwood).  Home prices tend to be higher in Williamson county.

  • I live in Franklin and LOVE it! Houses are a little higher, but depending on your budget you can find houses in Franklin. Not all the houses here got hit by the flood. Like one of the PP said a realtor will be able to tell you.

The other area that is nice is Thompsons Station and Spring Hill. It is about 20-25 minutes from Franklin. It is growing and very nice also.

Franklin is a great little city and I enjoy it.

  • Franklin is great. My parents relocated to there about 4 years ago. Like others said, Williamson county has great schools and lots of restaurants and retail. My parents live in the McKay's Mill subdivision and have a great neighborhood community where they host driveway happy hours and have a book club once a month. Franklin has their own farmer's market and very cute downtown. It is actually a historic town vs. Brentwood which is more of a suburb.

DH and I didn't want to live down there because it was further from Nashville/Vanderbilt-area than we wanted to be and because we are child-free and wanted to be closer to vibrant nightlife/culture/etc.

  • We live on the Franklin/Nashville line, on the Franklin side.  We love it.  The schools are great, you're far enough from the city that it's not crazy busy and noisy but close enough to get there in 20 minutes, people are really friendly (in TN in general).  I actually think the property taxes are low (but I moved here from South Florida where they are really high, so by comparison anything would be low).

The only con I can think of about Franklin is that it's HUGE (area wise, not population wise) and there aren't any real direct ways to get from one side to the other.  DH and I are friends with a couple who live in Franklin but it takes us 30-45 minutes to get to their house.
