My grandmother's surprise 80th birthday party is rapidly approaching and my sister and I have taken charge of the dessert table. The event is at 5pm and a catered dinner will be served and some family members are covering various apps and sides.
We would like to provide a variety of desserts, but I'm having trouble figuring out how many options and then, within those options, how many servings of each we should have.
Right now I'm figuring on:
1/4 sheet cake to hold the required "Happy Birthday Grandmom!" message
10" round two-layer coconut cake, the birthday girl's favorite flavor
At least one batch (24) of Oreo cupcakes... maybe two?
I need to fill in the gaps with other non-cake-based options, but I just don't know how much I should have when it's all said and done. Any suggestions?
Re: Desserts for ~100 people
I know the bday girl likes the coconut cake, but I'd save that for a smaller celebration. It's not going to go far at all for 100 people. I'd up the sheet cake to at least a half if not whole and double the oreo cupcakes. My thought process being at least half the people attending should have the option of choosing a dessert.
For add-ons: chocolate covered strawberries, clothespin cookies, puffs, mini fruit tarts or cheesecakes, cookies.
Another completely out there idea- ice cream sundae bar. Logistically it might be a pain in the ass for 100, but it could be fun.

I think it's too much cake! I don't know about the cupcakes....I'd try to give some other options. Maybe a cookie tray with assorted styles of cookies, petit fours, oreo truffles (instead of the cupcakes), mini cheesecakes, some sort of blondie or brownie....
Well, when you think about it in terms of a wedding....100 people is a good size and usually there's just cake. If you're going to have cake and other desserts, you don't need a ton of the others. I would figure maybe 1-2 extra pieces of dessert for each guest...some will take less and some will take more. If you end up having extra leftover, send them home people....it won't be easy to turn down!
For that many people, you have to think about *how* the desserts will be served. Buffet style? Does everyone get served one of everything at their seat? You might take a cue from how dinner is being served.
I would go one of two ways:
*one* large cake for everyone. Like PP mentioned, think wedding cake.
or
Several different options spread out buffet style. And nothing you have to cut. So cupcakes, cream puffs, tarts, chocolate strawberries, fancy cookies, etc. If you need the requiste "Happy Birthday Grandmom" how about spelling it out on the cupcakes? Or you can do the small coconut cake with the candle (that will go to the back and get packed up for grandma to take home once you sing happy birthday).
HTH.
This 1000%. I was thinking the same as gator. Do all wedding cake or all individual things.

Thanks for all of the feedback, everyone!
I think we're going with a buffet-style set-up to have a variety of options, just for fun. The Oreo cupcakes, coconut cake and ordered birthday cake do amount to a lot of cake, I agree, but my Mom has specifically requested each of those items. So anything else I do won't be cake-based: cheesecakes, bars, etc. Your ideas have been wonderful and I'm going recipe-hunting tonight!
The other food will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, probably a salad and/or veggie tray, some chips and dip. Other family members are coordinating the catering and then making the rest of the dishes so I'm not entirely sure of the exact details - I just know there's going to be a full dinner spread offered up buffet-style.
The event's going to be held in a hall, so space isn't a concern for spreading stuff around.
I think i fondue station would be a very classy touch! Do a chocolate fountain and then assorted fruits, marshmallows, pound cake, pretzles.
Also Oreo Truffels are great and easy to make, you can do them in white or reg. chocolate as well.
