HOORAY Obama delays oil drilling in Alaska

I cheered and screamed "YES!!!" when I heard this on the radio this morning:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37370226/ns/gulf_oil_spill

Little tidbit:

Escalating his administration's response to the disastrous Gulf oil spill, President Barack Obama plans to announce Thursday that a moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits will be continued for six months while a presidential commission investigates, a White House aide said.

Controversial lease sales off the coast of Alaska will be delayed pending the results of the commission's investigation, and lease sales planned in the Western Gulf and off the coast of Virginia will be canceled, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of a midday Obama news conference.

Re: HOORAY Obama delays oil drilling in Alaska

  • Did you hear, though, that the moratorium was just a verbal thing?  At least the previous one was, according to a story I heard on NPR yesterday.  So while it was supposedly being followed and the "new permits" that were being issues were really just "modified permits" there's no real proof about if it's being followed or not.

    ETA Link to yesterday's story

  • I heard something yesterday about him wanting to open drilling off the eastern seaboard, but when I got up this morning there was a news story on the BBC about him tightening up on drilling.
