Mom question - is it too early for toddler beds?
My guys are always banging themselves on the sides of their cribs and waking up. I am thinking about putting their mattresses on the floor or getting rails for their toddler beds.
Am I nuts? I know they will wake up and start running around their room in the middle of the night.......they never STTN. and most often they end up in bed with mommy and daddy. They are the best snuggle-bunnies!
When did you get rid of your cribs? My guys are 17 months.
Re: Mom question - is it too early for toddler beds?
Isaac was right around that age when he stopped sleeping his crib. One night I heard him screaming and there he was hanging on the side of the crib. Isaac's crib actually doubled as a daybed so we used that for a year or so. And to avoid him wandering around the house, we used gates to only allow him access to our room. It worked perfectly and when he turned 3, we bought him a twin.
Not sure how much you want to spend on your toddler beds but I saw some rather cute ones at Ikea this past weekend. They were very low to the ground and appeared to be very toddler safe:) The price was also very affordable, especially considering you use them for such a short time frame.
Funny, I was just thinking about that last weekend. I was up at my sister's house in SF and her baby (18 mos) is already out of her crib. I asked her if she gets up and runs around and she said nope.
Gavin is up a couple of times through the night so I feel like he'd be running all over the place if we took him out of the crib. I have yet (surprisingly) to see him climb out of the crib. I'm sure it's not far off though.
You know they say the longer in the crib the better. ?That said, we transitioned Jacob to a toddler bed on July 1, about 3 weeks after his 2nd bday. ?He has gotten up a few times, and a few days have been rough, meaning he doesn't want to go to sleep so he keeps getting out of bed, but overall we are happy with it. ?His crib was a convertible one so we just used that, and will continue until we need it for baby #2, then we are just going to get him a twin bed.
Jacob's bed doesn't have a guard rail, just a reminder rail that is about 1" higher than his mattress, he has only fallen out once.
I would leave them in as long as I could, ?they would just bang themselves on the guard rails of the toddler beds too. ?but that is just my opinion.?
I hit post before finishing.
I think it's not too early for toddler beds for your boys. I think with them being so mobile they'll need to get out of their crib before they start climbing out of them. Now with the getting out and moving around in the middle of the night. Not sure what will happen with your boys but Camille seemed to do fine. She has always slept through the night but she did start waking up when moved to the toddler bed. She didn't walk around at night until just recently (she'll be 3 in Nov). For the most part she would sit in her bed and either cry/whimper or call our names until someone came to her room.
Not sure if I'm much help, since I'm late but...both girls have convertible crib/beds.
Natalie is still in the crib set-up, and she's 19 mo.
Jocelyn was in the crib set-up until she was almost 3 yr. She did try climbing out of the crib (about age 18-24 mo), but gave that up once she discovered that it was a pretty far fall to the ground. She's a cuddler-sleeper and would love to stay in bed with me and DH, but she's just getting too big and squirmy. She is a pretty good sleeper, so even if she were able to roll out of a toddler bed at a younger age or wake up, I'm not sure that's she would have gotten up and walked around.
Do you have room to move the cribs out and test-drive matteresses on the floor in their room? Maybe that will help you decide. While it's hard to say what age is "right" for the bed move, it depends really on how they STTN. Maybe even shop for fun "big boy" bedding together...to encourage them to stay in their big boys beds!!!
Good luck!
Do they share a room? I would worry that they might wake each other up and get out of bed to play.
