My first one was a lot of fun. It was a lingerie shower and we did brunch foods. There was a shrimp and grits station, a bunch of seafood (my favorite), lots of fresh fruit, mimosas, stuff like that. We didn't play games, which was a-ok by me. The invitations were some type of lingerie and I remember them being pink and black, but the specifics are not coming to mind. The hostess didn't do favors, or any decor other than fresh flowers. What I really loved was just how low-key it was and everyone got to walk away with their dignity intact.
ETA: I should add that the guest list was comprised of my grandmother, stepmom, her best friend (the hostess), three of my BMs, a few family friends, and one cousin and two aunts. No prudes in that bunch and they all tried to out-do each other when it came to horribly inappropriate gifts/comments.
As the guest, I find some sort of alcoholic drink a nice touch. Lets face it..they can be boring when you aren't the bride so something yummy to sip on is much appreciated. Mimosa, fruity drink, etc.
At my shower we played this quiz game where I had to win prizes on behalf of my guests. My sister put all the guests names in a bowl. She'd pull a name and then ask ME a question (questions shes already asked my husband). If I said the same thing he did, the person who's name she called won the prize. So it was a way to get the guests involved but without forcing them to answer questions. Typically I'm not a game person at all but I found that one to not be too horrible.

And LOTS of personal touches (for instance: if the bride is a huge classic rock music buff- have that playing softly in the background. For me it was crafty touches- there were tons of handmade details.)
A Personal guest list- not inviting every single woman friend that the bride, MOB, and MOG know. It's very obvious that you're begging for gifts. IMO
This. Give me real food, a little drink, and don't make me play a silly game.

I see where you're coming from on the games. I have a feeling that the bride *might* be a little "traditonal" on the game-front and maybe we'll do the toilet paper brides to make her happy. But I'll definitely ask her what she thinks she and her guests would be comfortable with.
As far as food & drink, what do you think about sticking to wine & cheese? (with crackers, breads, fruit, nuts too of course). We're looking at about 30 guests, so we want to keep it economical, but still classy. And definitely don't want hungry guests at the shower!
We want to have it as a nice gathering and celebration. So I'm with PP on fresh flowers. Not really looking to hang garlands with wedding bells or anything of the sort.
Yes, if I guessed wrong they didn't get anything. ha. but I only got one wrong and I think my sister gave that person a gift anyway (easy funny questions)! They were all small gifts.
I think you might want to do a little bit more than just wine and cheese with crackers and fruit. I think you should just add one "main meal" type of thing. Maybe small sandwiches? You could make sandwiches on white bread and cut them into fourths and have a tray of them. Then also have the crackers, cheese, fruit, etc.

my mom did some nice personal things at my bridal shower...as each person came in she asked them to write a message or inspirational marriage related quote on an easel and i picked the five i liked the best and those who wrote them got a prize...and i got to keep the poster with all the lovly messages that my friends and family wrote. she also had a lot of photos of my DH and I around, as well as the story of how we met and how he proposed etc...I liked that and many people loved reading little things about us...
i like showers that are personal
I did the toilet paper, paper towels, tissue paper, beads, lace, tulle, etc. The shower was at a house with a long hallway where the brides had to model down the catwalk. I video taped it. HILARIOUS. I also had shades of blues and greens and teals in cardstock, cut them out as waves and had guests write wedding/love advice. I took all the waves and framed them. Used that as part of my wedding gift.
For mine we had a "who knows the bride best" quiz. It was fun, but unfair to future inlaws. Another one of mine was near the Kentucky Derby...we decorated OUTRAGEOUS hats with poster board, tulle, beads, etc. We also modeled those and videotaped.
