XP: Mosquito Spray

Anyone found anything that's DEET-free that actually works?  And I mean really works because we have property up north where the mosquitoes and biting flies are the size of rodents.

I've thought about the OFF clip-ons but they're not effective if you're moving around a lot, which completely negates its use in anything I would want it for (gardening, hiking, etc.).

A friend recommended LiquidNet, but it uses Cedarwood oil, which should be avoided during pregnancy.

So.  Any Non-Cancer Causing Genuinely Effective Mosquito and Biting Fly Repellant that doesn't contain Essential Oils that are Bad For Pregnancy?

Help?

Re: XP: Mosquito Spray

  • I've heard that rosemary is a natural mosquito repellant.  But that doesn't help when you're out and about.  Carry some twigs in your back pocket?  Wink

  • Those clip ons are crap.  I tried them last year.

I wish I had an answer to your question.  Some people recommend spraying only your clothes and not your body to decrease your exposure, but it's hardly chemical-free that way.

Someone should design mosquito net outfits.

  • real vanilla works great, but you have to reapply a lot. Basically as soon as the scent wears off.. but you always smell like cookies!

  • DH and I bought some skedattle.

That said I'm not sure if it really works yet.  We tried the all terrain last night.  We got eaten alive...but we were a little late and prob also didn't spray enough.

Anyhoo so the skedattle we will try tonight...(or at least this weekend)

We have a creek behind us so we have MAJOR issues at the moment without the rain.

i used 10% neem oil in coconut oil today.  i counted 4 mosquito bites after 40 minutes outside, but i got more than that in 5 minutes the other day, so it's a big improvement.

Neem oil is an abortifacient and shouldn't be used by pregnant women, infants or children.

  • I've heard that if you drink Gin & Tonic bugs stay away from you (I actually think it's the Tonic), so I guess you could try to find something else to mix the Tonic with - or maybe you could just put it on your body...?  I have no idea how effective it would be - just a test I guess if you get desperate!

End Wrench: ice, 1 part orange juice, 1 part tonic water - Tastes remarkably like a screwdriver.  (I've never tried this, just found it online for you)

    Good Luck!

Yet another reason why G&T is the most awesome summer drink ever.

I've actually been making fake ones with Juniper Berry soda.  Maybe I've been off the sauce for too long but it tastes just like it to me!

gah.  you can't use anything while pregnant.  eucalyptus oil not safe (i think one of the sites said juniper berry was also contraindicated in pregnancy too).

you're just going to have to get these.
