need a flower that will bloom all summer long....

I am really new to flowers and planting and trying to landscape my yard, so please forgive the possible ridiculous question, but...........

I know there are a few flowers out there that will just continue to bloom...... I have purchased hanging baskets before that bloomed all summer long. petunias maybe.....

I have bulbs right now.... daffodils and tulips, in my front yard that need something to fill them in. I noticed this year that once they have bloomed and passed, i do not have anything for flowers there!!

so, I need to plant something with them that will bloom when they are done, and preferably something that will bloom all summer long!

Thanks!

Re: need a flower that will bloom all summer long....

  • Is your area sun or shade?

My full to part sun favorite annuals:

Petunias, Vinca (not the groundcover vinca), Geranium, Lantana, Zinnia. I'm growing Cosmos this year, so far it's doing very well. I particuarly love the Vinca and Geraniums. Vinca's go strong in the summer heat and look great.

Geraniums do very well in the summer, but they will last into light frosts. I plant them in early spring (as soon as avaliable) and I don't have to get them out of the ground until the first hard frost in November. (I'm in zone 7b)

If your bed is mostly bulbs, you may want to also consider adding some summer bulbs like lilies to it. My bulbs include daffodils, crocus, tulips, irises and lilies. Right now, the lilies have the show and once they finish, my annuals will have taken over. I had a very good progression of bulbs flowering this year by including them in my beds.

Ditto pp. ANNUALS are what you want. They bloom until they die in the winter.

  • If you want perennials or shrubs, here are a few that I have found that bloom all summer:

knockout rose, cranesbill geranium rozanne, day lillies happy returns, tickseed, scabiosa (excuse spelling errors).
