relocating questions

My husband just got a new job in downtown Chicago so we'll soon be relocating from Columbus, Ohio to Chicago.  We're looking to ideally buy a townhome.  We have friends helping us with the different neighborhoods but they're all renters.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a bank to get a mortgage from?  We have very good credit, he has a solid income (we'll use my ohio income since i'll be staying here our current place sells), etc.  There should be no problems getting approved for a loan, i'm just looking for advice where to start.  i looked at Chase but their closing costs were super high (we had minimal costs with our current bank).

But also, since all our friends are renters-does anyone have recommendations for good, patient realtors?

 TIA!

Re: relocating questions

  • I have had mortages with both Wells Fargo and now GMAC...and both have been quite customer-friendly and competitive, but I haven't looked since end of 2006.

I live in a townhouse in Bucktown... there aren't that many townhouses in the city, but neighborhoods you might like to check out are Bucktown, Wicker Park and Roscoe Village.  Depending on size, they range from $400 - $650k, even more if in Lincoln Park (which I would avoid - super high property taxes).  Depends on if you are looking for garage space (1 or 2 car garage), rooftop deck, number of bedrooms, location to public trans.  These are all basically 20 - 30 min commutes by train / bus to downtown (approx 4 miles away).

  • We used Wells Fargo for our house and everything was pretty easy.  Even when I forget my online password and call at like 11pm, they help!

Illinois is a HIGH closing cost state, so you'll get that with any lender.
