Indy no-kill shelters/rescues?
I have FB friend who posted that she needs to get rid of her 1.5 year old German Shepherd mix. She says the dog does well with kids and other pets. She's getting rid of her because they're moving and won't have room for her. If they can't find her a home they're taking her to a shelter. I'd hate to see the dog be euthanized because of her owner's issues. Any suggestions? I'm not in Indy and Goggle didn't help much. She's on the South side if that helps.
Re: Indy no-kill shelters/rescues?
...I'm going to be nicer than I normally would be because this isn't your dog and you can't control what your friend does.
First, as for shelters, there are pretty much NO true "no-kill" shelters. Even ones that say they are "no-kill" do have to euthanize on occasion. They may not do it as much as "kill" shelters, but they still do.
Where did she get this dog? If she adopted, she needs to check her adoption contract. Most places state that the dog must go back to that particular shelter if the owner decides to give it up.
Here are some German Shepherd rescues in Indiana:
GSD Rescue, central Indiana
NE Indiana
Vom Blue in southern Indiana <--they are more rottie specific, but they take in other larger breeds as well.
There is no guarantee that any of those places will have openings. So many people are surrendering their pets right now because of the economy and the fact of the matter is there just isn't enough room for all of them.
I have no patience for people who use the "I'm moving" excuse. She knew she had a dog, she should have factored that into her plans. Again, I know, not your fault, but I work in rescue and all those excuses annoy me. I hope your friend doesn't get any more pets.

<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DITA. I would never move anywhere we couldn't take one of our pets. I really don't know where she got the dog or even why since they don't really have the time or financial resources for a pet and they seem to move frequently. This is someone I've lost touch with for the most part, but is still on my friends list. I offered to help because I don't want the dog to suffer because of her owner's bad judgment.
Unfortunately, she just posted that she took the dog to the Humane Society today. I will likely remove her from my friend list at this point. I really hope the dog finds a forever home.
I am thankful that it was the HS and not IACC, so hopefully the dog will have a chance, especially since IHS has connections to various breed rescues.
I support your decision to remove the friend from your FB list.
