Visiting Portland

Hello,

I will be tagging along with my husband on his business trip to Portland in two weeks.  I have never been to the area.  That's where you nesties come in.  What are some fun things to do in Portland?  How is the weather in the area this time of the year?  Thanks for your help.

Re: Visiting Portland

  • Right now the weather is anyone's guess.  Lately it's been rain.  Lots and lots of rain.  That could all change in an instant though, and all of a sudden it's 70.  Check back in as it gets closer to time for you to leave, but I'd pack some lightweight pants, jeans, one pair of shorts (though I doubt you'll use them, you never know) and layers for your top half, along with a rain coat.

As far as things to do, what kinds of things are you interested in?  We have museums, theatres, shopping, historical things, lots of outdoor activities like hiking, biking and boating.  I just got a cool Living Social deal for a 90 minute river sail through a charter company, just $24 a person, which might be fun for you - http://livingsocial.com/deals/2044?ref=personalized-link-box-321886&rpi=321886.  You sail the river in the middle of Portland and see the sights.  And of course we have lots of good restaurants to try.

Let us know what kinds of things you're interested in, where you'll be staying and we can definitely help.  Will have access to a car?  If not, that's totally fine - our public transport works well.

  • Ditto pp that the weather could do anything. June is unpredictable. Even if it's pouring rain on the day you leave, pack at least one warm weather outfit - and even if it's 80 and sunny, bring a rain coat. Dress in layers.

I assume you'll be downtown? There is shopping at pioneer square (more typical stuff), the pearl (more unique but pricey), and NW 21st/23rd (funky independent shops). All are on public transit. If it's dry, there is a bike rental place on the waterfront, right across from the Trade Center. You can ride up and down the waterfront, which is one of my favorite places in town (walking/running is great too). The art museum is great; there's also an Oregon history museum which gets some neat exhibits. I *think* the rose festival may be going on then too... there are lots of activities related to that. You can also access the zoo from the MAX line. Portland also has a good music scene.

travelportland.com is a good website, too.
