Traveling to St. Louis

We have a wedding this July in IL, near the border of St. Louis MO, so we are flying to St Louis and will make a vacation out of it.

Where would you recommend to stay at and what to do in and near St. Louis?

thanks!

Re: Traveling to St. Louis

  • There are a lot of things to do in the area, what types of things do you guys like to do (art, sports, outdoorsy, etc.)

  • Lots of hotels Downtown should offer easy access across the river.

Cards' baseball games are always a must.

Several exciting options in Forest Park are free and just minutes from Downtown. (The Zoo, Science Center, the Art Museum, the History Museum and Broadway-style productions at the Muny - although free seats at the Muny require standing in line for a long time before the shows begin... I usually just opt to buy seats!) The Boathouse is a restaurant in Forest Park (and they also rent boats for paddling around the lagoon, as well as bikes for taking a tour of the park.)

MO Botanical Gardens are gorgeous, and admission is free Saturday mornings before noon.  They also offer free outdoor jazz concerts Wednesday nights during the summer. Other days and times, fare is reasonable.

City Museum is Downtown and a very eclectic "adult playground."  There's no other way to describe it.  Admission fares are fairly steep in my opinion, but lots of people LOVE the place.  It really depends on the person.

As for food stuffs, The Hill is a neighborhood in South St. Louis with wonderful Italian cuisine.   My favorite restaurants are Favazza's (Italian) and Guido's (Spanish/Italian.)  Places Downtown include The Dubliner (upscale Irish pub), Clark Street Grill (mod-priced  American), and Mike Shannon's, named for the popular Cards' announcer.

Lots of bars and dining can be found Downtown on Washington Ave and Laclede's Landing, so staying around those places will offer you lots to do in evenings. Other popular (and eclectic) hangout areas in St. .Louis include The Delmar Loop, South Grand and Soulard, each minutes from Downtown.

If you're up for a day trip, Missouri has some amazing wineries about 30 miles outside St. Louis, My personal favorite is Montelle, but there are lots in the Augusta, MO area, as well as on the Illinois side near Maryville and Grafton.  Other day trips wold include Six Flags (In Eureka, MO) and Raging Rivers (in Grafton, IL).

Last but not least, Ted Drewes is located in South City (10 minutes from Downtown) and offers some of the best frozen custard around.

Enjoy your trip to St. Louis!  (Can you tell I love living here???)

  • HOW COULD I FORGET THE ARCH?!  WTF?!
  • Our favorite downtown hotels are the Westin and The Four Seasons.  There are plenty others, but we've stayed at both of those numerous times and had great experiences.

Also, there is a restaurant that is our new fave called Lola.  It is worth the short walk or drive!
