Seeds or sprouts?

Do you buy seedlings or seeds?

I bought sprouts this year (beans, tomatoes, strawberries, herbs, peppers) and planted them but I did radishes and corn from seed and I will totally do seeds again next year.

I just wasn't sure what is easiest from seed or sprouts.

Re: Seeds or sprouts?

  • well, for most things it's easiest to start from starts/plants/sprouts.  However, root veg like radishes & carrots must be planted from seed (otherwise they get deformed during transplant).

I start from seeds b/c it's cheaper and it gives me something to do in the winter.

depends on the plants.  but in general, i enjoy starting from seed, and i'll do seeds for veggies I like to have a ton of (tomatoes, basil, peppers, corn), and plants if I just want one or two of the plants.

  • i was wondering why I couldn't find beet and carrot plants!   That makes sense now.   i also couldn't find peas so bought seeds for those, too.

I put them straight into the bed this weekend, hopefully it's still early enough in the year that they produce.

I buy seeds for everything.  And then, dependsing on the plant, I either start my own seedlings in the winter/spring or direct sow in the ground.

starting from seed is a bit of an art - you need adequate light to promote growth, a warm area to promotr germination and then the ability to control humidty to prevent dampening.
