We have our annual Fiesta on Saturday and I'm trying to think of what we can quickly put together for the children that are coming. We normally don't plan anything, but people are bringing their kids this year (which is fine), their kids are getting old enough to want to do something, or people with kids who normally aren't able to make it ARE able to make it this year.
I expect we'll have ~10 kids from ages 4 up to about 10. Last year, one of the boys was NOT happy when he asked his dad if we had games and he was told no. I stupidly said "We have like ladder golf and bean bags." I was informed he meant more like XBox and Wii. ![]()
Any ideas? My first instinct was crayons and coloring books (plus they're fairly cheap... Greg is kind of fighting me at doing ANYTHING for kids.) But everytime I see kids, it's like that's so boring to them nowadays.
Help!
Re: I need help.
Last year we didn't have a Wii. And this year, I don't really care for the idea of people leaving their kids inside playing our Wii unattended while the parents party outside. (Nobody ever stays inside, although this year it might rain and therefore the adults will be inside... kids aren't playing Wii if the adults are cowering indoors from rain/cold!)
I guess that story was more of a tangent about how technology has taken over... we never got an option when we were growing up. You entertained yourselves.. you played tag or something. Now it's like we have to provide gaming entertainment?!
We could always fall back on Greg's one lone idea: just let them play with the Jarts we got as a housewarming gift a few years ago. LOL
The totally "vintage" Jarts.... complete with metal tips. I said "And you want me to have your kids someday?!?" He said "What? They can play with them too." Oy, MH... he's a funny, funny man.
Coloring books wouldn't last that long, maybe half an hour or so before they got board.
In reality, I don't think it's your responsibility to entertain the kids. This is an adult party that people are bringing their kids to.
With that being said, if you have a yard, I'd try to find a few things for them to do out there. The Wal-mart by us has these plastic golf clubs (with mini golf bag-all plastic) for $5 each. They are cheap and they like to play with them (at least the neighbor kids did last week when they were playing with David's and they were in the range of 4-10 years old.
Get a few soccer balls or those cheap vinyl balls and have those in the yard. If the parents allow and you don't mind cleaning them up later, there is always water balloons.
I agree you should not have to be responsible for providing entertainment for the kids. Now if you specifically invited the kids then I would have something for them...but something small like a soccer ball to play with like Melanie suggested.
Maybe it's just me but I never assume someone will have toys for Declan to play with (I know he's a little easier to entertain then an 8 year old) and bring toys for him.
And most of these people have been to your fiesta's before so they know it's basically adult activities...this time kids will be present.
