Green moms - Can I ask a baby related question here? Cloth diapers?

I assume this would be the board to ask since my question is about cloth diapers?? I'm trying to get an idea of how much one could expect to spend monthly on cloth diapers? I assume it would be more of a start up cost rather than a monthly expense (other than water and detergent used for washing)?

Thanks!

  • The Eco-Friendly Family Board on the Bump is the cloth-diapering headquarters.  I'm sure they can answer any questions you have, we don't talk about them much on here b/c they are the experts.

  • SuperGreen - thanks! I'll move the post over there to see if they have any info.

  • It depends A LOT on what kind of diapers you use and how often you want to wash. We use only BumGenius 3.0 AIO diapers. They're $15-17 per diaper. We didn't start CDing until later so we only bought one size (large). We have about 20 diapers but we wash frequently. We use one disposable daily for overnight because we haven't been able to find a cloth diaper that will hold him overnight.

ETA: When we used disposables, we spent about $80/mth. We've been using the size large BGs for a little over a year now so they were well worth the investment.

Thanks! That gives me an idea of what it would cost. It seems like more people would do it just to save money, if for no other reason.

A lot of people think it is way more work than it is and are not willing to try.  I know everyone looks at me like I have two heads when I say we CD'd DD for 1.5 year (we started around 1) and plan to do the same with DD#2.  People remember CDing in the 70s, with diaper pins, wet pails and tons of bleach :)

We also have mainly BG, but we paid around 20-25$ each.  They are one size, so a bit more expensive, but also I'm in Canada.  Disposables are more expensive here too, so it is worth it.
