eco-baby stuff at big box stores?

I have to go to a baby shower coming up and so ordering online is a little tight, as is money. Do the big stores like Toys R Us sell any eco-baby stuff (and yes that's what she wants and no, she's not registered, which is really helpful for those of us that know nothing about babies...)

Re: eco-baby stuff at big box stores?

  • BRU does carry some brands.  If you have a whole foods near you, they carry the California Baby line as well as a few others.
  • Target has the California Baby products, which I really like.  Most also have some sort of organic cotton clothing or blankets.  If you know she'll be pumping or formula feeding, I love Born Free bottles (I wouldn't get too many).  I also really liked reusable mesh feeders for when baby starts solids, and those are at Target.  Not super eco-friendly, but nice to have.  We don't have the Babies R Us, etc up here, so while I know they have organic cotton items, I'm not sure what else they carry in stores.  You could buy some gently used clothing?  Don't know how truly eco-baby you want to get...  There are some eco friendly baby items at a local EF shop here, which really has nothing else to do with babies, so maybe if you have a 'green' shop by you you can check and see if they have any baby items.

  • I would LOVE to get a bunch of California Baby stuff as a gift. That's what I'd go for. Or books.
  • lol I have NO idea what California Baby is (off to look!) but it sounds popular!

Shopping for a baby shower with no registry info is tough when you know nothing about babies.

I did find a site online that had a toy I liked (an organic soft duck 'stacker') and a cute outfit I might get... gah...all this baby stuff is complicated and expensive!

My friends have all had registries, and it's still difficult for me, so don't feel bad!  I can only imagine how confused I'd be if they didn't have any guidelines--I would probably curl up in a corner and rock back and forth, I'd be so overwhelmed!

  • I agree with the pp's. CA Baby stuff is great. We use their sunscreen, the general soap/shampoo in the calming scent and bubble bath.

I really wish I could. I don't even know what's appropriate! I really don't want to look cheap, but I'm also on a tight budget, and they're not.

If there was any way out of this... I'd take it!

  • Don't buy at BRU if you can help it, they're evil and icky.

In Seattle, Birth and Beyond is fabulous (they're in Madison Valley and have a satellite store in Fremont)... you can get the mom great stuff there. And they can give you fantastic recommendations - - the staff are amazing.

A great shower gift at about $40 is a Moby Wrap... they sell them at Birth and Beyond and many other stores.

The Girl is 5. The Boy is 2. The Dog is 1.

    I am the 99%.
  • You could totally go to Target, pick up a bunch of Cali Baby, Burt's Baby, Method, etc., grab some books, put them in a basket and your done. Throw in the gift receipt and she will get whatever she wants if somehow books and baby soap aren't it. If you want, you could just GC the whole thing. If there's time, check out http://giggle.com to see a whole bunch of stuff she will def want but you might not want to spend the money on!
  • I would love to get a package of California Baby stuff.  Nature's Baby Organics is also a nice line of skin products.  Baby washcloths are great if you see any organic cotton ones.

  • Just to throw in another idea, Whole Foods has a great baby isle full of clothes, shoes, toys, Moby wrap, etc. that are eco-friendly :)

  • 4 of my friends went in and got the cloth diaper trial for our friend.  I want to say it was $100 so $25-ish a piece.  She used the trial and returned the one's that didn't work exchanging them for ones that did.  It seemed to work out pretty well.

I know that Barley and Birch clothes are awesome.  The founder/owner Kyle is amazing.  But I didn't see any stores in your area that carry them. :(

I agree with Target suggestion.  I know there is some stuff there.  I know Kroger stores carry CA and Jason products..(Kroger=Ralphs I think on the west coast)

  • We have an organic ring staker (it is a monkey) and B loves it.
