Kitchen composter advice

I need to get a kitchen composter that I can leave out on the counter. I've found several online for around $25 (ceramic) and $40 (stainless steel). My main concern is keeping things from smelling. I plan to empty it every day or two. Do you have one you recommend? Is there anything specifically I should look for or are they all basically the same?

Thanks!

Re: Kitchen composter advice

  • Is there a reason it needs to be left out?

We all get small food waste buckets with lids as part of our trash program. My friends keep theirs under the sink and it doesn't smell. Its covered and they use the bio bags in it. I don't make enough food waste to fill it up soon enough so I just keep a bowl in the fridge.

  • We just don't have a lot of storage space so it would be better to leave it out. And, DH will be more likely to remember to use it if it's in his face on the counter.

  • we have one of the ceramic ones that has the carbon filter.  It doesn't smell at all- well only when you open it.

  • We have this one from Gardener's Supply.  It's ceramic and has a carbon filter, it looks great.

  • We have this one from the container store.  In fact, they sent me two by mistake when I bought it and told me not to bother sending the other back...I'll make you a good deal on it if you're interested!  Stick out tongue

Thanks for the offer :-) It's really cute but we want a ceramic or stainless steel one. It will go better with our kitchen.

So I need to make sure I get the filters - will do!

  • I went to Ross and picked out a cheap cookie jar/canister with a tight fitting lid. We have had no smell or bug problems with it. Picture here.

  • We have a SS one that uses the carbon filters.  You will know when they run out...stinky.  Although we don't empty it every 2 days, more like when it's full, which is 1-2x / week.  I think the filter lasted about 2 months.  As long as you get one that uses the filters, the can material is personal preference.  Thx for reminding me to order more!
  • I just got an Oxo Pop container and keep it under the sink and pull it out when I need it. The pop top keeps all the smells inside. Is there a reason you need to have something on your counter. I personally wouldn't spend $25-40 on a fancy mini garbage can.

  • I have this one from amazon. it's silver and came with filters. it is similar to the ones at BB&B and C&B, except those were bigger and we just needed the small one. it is great. have had it for almost 2 months and have yet to have any smells. we empty every few days.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm going to pick up a SS or ceramic one this weekend. And, I'll make sure I get the filters for it to help with the smell.
