fruit flies in compost bin. A problem?

Should I be using more browns? Would that even help? Is this even an issue, or is it normal?

Re: fruit flies in compost bin. A problem?

  • I'm no expert, but more browns -- just cover it with whatever you are using for browns. I always keep the compost covered with a drier layer and that's working well for me.

  • This is a drawback that I have found my bins. With a ground pile, it is so easy to top the exposed surface with a brown layer (which means flies stay away). In a bin that has holes (mine does, not sure if yours does) the sides are also exposed here and there and there is no way to assure browns on the outside all the way down the bin. I've just learned to deal with it.
