Rue McClanahan

Rue McClanahan passed away today.  Sad  I loved (and still do love) the Golden Girls so this is quite sad.  However, she was 76 years old... I didn't realize she was so young on the show.  They made them all seem so old.  Sigh... looks like Betty White is the last one.

Also, I guess that's the third one.  First Gary Coleman, then Dennis Hopper, now Rue.  Hopefully that's the end of the streak.

Re: Rue McClanahan

  • Yes, it's very sad.  I love watching that show too, even when I was a little kid, and up until now.  It was always so funny without having to be too vulgar, you know?

She was only 76??  You're right, they did make them seem older on the show!!
  • Sad She was my favorite Golden Girl.
  • Sad indeed.  I am also a huge GG fan.  On the show, she was the youngest character (and the youngest actress of the four)...I believe she was supposed to be in her early fifties.  According to Wikipedia:

During her junior year in high school, in spring 1949, when she was 17, she almost eloped with Deck Boughvenlough, the father of her rival at cheerleading with the sole purpose of having her taken off the squad. From this story, we learn that Blanche was born in 1932. This made her 53 when the first season begins and 61 when The Golden Palace went off the air in 1993.

That said, yes, in the mid-80's they made these 50-60 year old women out to be "old" but it was pretty revolutionary at the time to have them portrayed as well-rounded women with sex lives, etc.  Until then, most older women were portrayed as grandmothers and old bitties.  When you think that the SATC characters are portrayed by actresses all in their 40-50's it makes you realize just how far we've come in terms of showing aging women in our culture.  I doubt the SATC girls will be playing bridge or taking senior cruises in the next decade! LOL!

  • Thanks for the extra info!  Very good point about the shift in society's view of what is considered "old" and what "old people" are supposed to do in their spare time.  Smile I love it!
