Perennial flower garden?

Does anyone know of an online source for help planning a perennial flower garden? I'm having trouble choosing things of the correct/varying heights and things that will have staggering blooms throughtout the summer.

I'm in Michigan...help!

Re: Perennial flower garden?

  • Bhg.com has garden plans and Sunset.com has a lot of info, it is primarily for western regions.  Have you talked to a local nursery? If you have time to visit on a weekday, you can probably snag a salesperson for a long talk.

I'm a new gardener too and just planted a ton of perennials, and just thought I'd offer unsolicited advice.  Start with what you love and start filling out from there.  If you decide things could look better, you can add, subtract or re-arrange next year.

  • if you go to wildflower.org and browse to plant database you can search by your state, growth habit, annual, bi-ennial, or perennial, growth conditions, and moisture levels to get a list of native plants suitable for your area.  Additionally you can narrow it down by choosing bloom time and bloom color to help choose plants better.

I would get an idea of what you want the garden to look like and what areas you want to bloom at what time (and what colors) and then start looking for individual plants.

  • Try michiganbulb.com

I get their catalog in the mail. They have some diagrams/pictures of perennial gardens. I think they may even sell all the bulbs as a set. They'll have things will do well in a northern climate.

  • We used a plan off the Better Homes and Garden site and modified it based on what we needed to fill in.  I liked that (at least on the plan we used) told you what the plant would look like in the fall/winter as well as the spring and summer, ad helps show what goes well together.
