Sunscreen

Have you guys seen this article about sunscreens?

http://www.aolnews.com/health/article/study-many-sunscreens-may-be-accelerating-cancer/19488158

All of the sunscreens I have (Neutrogena, Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic) are all among the "avoid" rating (7-10) in the EWG database =( I need to find better sunscreens.

Do any of you ladies have sunscreens that you love/recommend that are rated favorably in the database?

Re: Sunscreen

  • I must look at that list. DH uses coppertone sport... we'll see how it rates... off to go look!
  • I use Aveeno sunscreen for babies and it's a 7 :-/...  I've heard pure shea butter is a natural sunscreen but I don't think I'm ready to abandon commercial sunscreens just yet...  DH uses No-Ad (another 7) and Coppertone Sport.

Hmmm...  I'll have to do more research!

  • I bought some alba and jason organics at the grocery store last summer.  looks like Jason is better (alba is yellow).  I like them both, however I have dark skin to begin with and rarely burn so I can't really speak to their effectiveness.  Seems like the Alba worked better for DH with lighter skin.

I have California Baby (expensive, but worth it) for Jack.

My (step)dad has skin cancer (seems to be under control) so he has to use prescription sunblock on top of wearing long sleeves, a hat, pants, etc.   I would be interested to know what that rates.  But he doesn't have much choice.

  • oh sunscreen- i could write tomes on this being a red head living in southern california who surfs and who is allergic to a load of the sunscreen ingredients.  yes i am aware of the dangers and the "hoax"  i have started using smart girls who surf www.smartgirlswhosurf.com  it is chemical free and really great.  i also use neutrogena for childredn sometimes the one without parasol it is okay and occasionaly i buy off ebay from europe anthelios or vichy for children with mexoryl but lately i have developped a sensitivity to that as well-
  • Ugh, this makes me so mad. I've been wearing sunscreen nearly everyday since Freshman year in highschool. And since moving to Hawaii, I've gone through hundreds of bottles of sunscreen. I am very fair skinned with lots of freckles. My mom has been battling skin cancer for the last ten years (she just went through another nasty procedure to cut away the latest crop of skin cancer cells). We used to sneak in sunscreen from Europe but we haven't been back in a couple years. I never thought to look for it on eBay! Thanks for the idea, beachbubbles!

I've been using Stila's SPF 30 tinted moisturizer, which is a 3. And at the beach I used Coppertone Sport SPF 50 (it's a 4), Coppertone Sport Faces SPF 50 (it's a 4), and Coppertone Oil Free SPF 30 (it's a 3). I think it's very lucky that the ones we've bought in the past have been rated so low. Thanks to this link, I'll be doing some research before I buy my next bottle!
