Need Restaurant and Things to do in Portland

I'm coming to Portland in a little while, and wanted to know if you had any restaurant recommendations and suggestions for things to do, see, etc.  I'll be busy during the day, but DH will probably want to explore a little bit.  He loves the outdoors.  I'm excitd to come visit Portland.  I've heard lots of good things about it, and this is also my first trip to the west coast.  TIA.

Re: Need Restaurant and Things to do in Portland

  • Well depending on the weather....

Rose Test Gardens/Japanese Garden/Washington Park.  The rose test garden offers a great view of the city and Mt. Hood on a good day and I'm sure the roses are beautiful now!

Multnomah Falls which is about 30-40 minutes outside the city but a gorgeous waterfall to see, plus there are many others you can basically just drive right up to along the Columbia River Highway

Powell's Books if it's rainiing...a HUGE bookstore that is just fun to walk around in.

     As for eats...

VooDoo Doughnuts for the yummiest, crazy doughnuts you could ever want.

Rogue Brewery for some great local brewed beer.  A lot of people rave about McMenamin's too but I personally think most of that is the atmosphere.  The Kennedy School is one of their establishments in NE portland and is pretty cool.  You can google it to check it out.

Thanks a lot.  I randomly saw Voodoo Doughnuts today on MSN when they were talking about the best doughnut places for National Doughtnut Day.  I will definitely be checking it out.

  • Where are you staying, and what kind of things are you interested in?  We have lots of museums, historical sites, and outdoorsy things to do.  A trip to the beach is just 90 minutes away by car.  OMSI is cool, and the Oregon Zoo, both of which you can get to via public transportation.  Pittock Mansion is neat and the McLoughlin House in Oregon City is interesting if you're into history, especially if you'd like to learn more about Oregon's history.  There's an aviation museum in Hillsboro, 30-45 minutes outside of Portland, that's pretty cool.  Definitely walk along the waterfront.  If you like to ride bikes, you can rent bicycles and ride all over Portland, we're a very bicycle friendly town.  There are neat walking tours around Portland too.  If you're here on a Saturday or Sunday check out the Saturday Market near the Burnside bridge.

What kind of food do you like?  We always take guests to Marrakesh on 21st and Lovejoy (ish, you'll need to google for the exact address).  It's a Morrocan "experience."  Montage, under the Morrison bridge, is fun late at night.  If you go to the beach definitely eat at Moe's.

  • Ditto previous recs (excellent ideas, ladies)

If you're into the outdoors, then definitely take a hike in Forest Park. It's best accessed by car. Sauvie's island, just west of Portland along the Columbia, has nice views and farm stands. It's popular for bike rides.

I highly recommend hitting up at least one brewpub while you are here. Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world. Not per capita. Period. LOL. Our favorite is Amnesia, on N Mississippi. (Which is a fun little area to browse, with little restaurants, clothing stores, and a fun recycled building materials place). It's super laid back and the beer is excellent. It's the kind of place where you can get a pitcher and play scrabble all afternoon. It's largely outdoors, so it's best for a warm day. Rogue, Bridgeport, and Deschutes (all in the Pearl area) and Widemere Brothers (near N Mississippi/Rose Quarter) are good too. Their beer is great and they are more of a restaurant.

If you are looking for finer dining, there are lots of great restaurants to choose from. Try at least one serving local, seasonal food. Wildwood (near NW 21st/23rd ave, which is also great for a stroll) is excellent. For something different, there is a great Peruvian restaurant, Andina, in the Pearl. FYI, in Portland you can dress fancy or wear jeans. You'll see it all, so where whatever you want.

And in case you haven't heard of Powell's Books before, it may sound weird to go to book store on vacation, but it really is THAT cool. We can loose ourselves for hours in that place. Great for rainy days!

  • Good call on Powell's!

Now that my brain is working I have a few more ideas for local places for food -

Papa Haydn - great dinners and fantastic desserts, there is one on SE 17th or one on NW 23rd.

Rose's - several to choose from, I'd go to either Lloyd Center or NW 23rd.  Famous for their ruben sandwiches and their crazy tall cakes.

Hot Lips Pizza - go to the one in the EcoTrust building, on NW 11th and Johnson.  If the weather is nice take your pizza and blackberry or apple soda (yes, seriously, it's delicious!) over to Jamison Park and watch the kids play in the fountain.  So fun!

  • I sent you a PM back about this
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies.  The wireless sucked at the hotel, there, so I couldn't really post or check.  All that to say, I did check out a lot of the places listed (Powell's, Vodoo, Mother's Bistro, Multnomah Falls, mobile food trucks, etc).

I really enjoyed myself and definitely will be coming back.
