Did we single-handedly bring down the cost of weddings?

When we were planning our wedding, Cost of Wedding said that the average cost for weddings for couples who live in our Zip Code was between $68,384 and $113,974, not even counting rings or the honeymoon. The average cost in the place where we had our ceremony was between $57,828 and $96,381.   Right now, the relevant figures are between $32,913 and $54,855 in the place where we live, and between $30,035 and $50,059 in the place where we had our ceremony.  So, did our $10,000 wedding alone bring the averages both places way down?

  • On the news the other night, the reported gave a figure of about 8k$ as the new national average.  That has to be an error.  How could it drop at least 20k$ in a year?

  • 2dBride - those numbers are insane! I almost don't believe them... what was the source?
  • It may be the economy finally hitting the wedding industry.  There will always be the giganto ones that they feature...but the majority seem to be given by people who are being forced by the job/economic situation to pull back.  Heather's wedding cost us just short of 25,000...but we divided it.  We paid 15 and Colin and Heather and his folks spent the other 10.  We could not have spent the 25,000 by ourselves.  I imagine that we are not alone...
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

Both sets of numbers came from Cost of Wedding.  I wrote down what it said a year ago.  Recently, I went back to check the links, and realized how much the numbers had changed.

Those numbers are ridiculous! Our NYC wedding was exactly $35,000, which we paid for in cash by ourselves (yay for being good at saving and budgeting!). We did things on the cheaper end of the spectrum for our marketplace, but still, I have friends who spent less around $10,000 and had perfectly lovely, smaller, simpler affairs. I don't know anyone who spends over $50k, but then again, I don't hang out with socialites! Wink
