I'm flying into Chicago for a bachelorette party tomorrow after work.  The girls who are driving in from downstate can no longer pick me up, as they are picking someone else up in Aurora instead.  So I'm left to my own devices to make it downtown from Midway. 

Do you think that someone who has never taken the El before can handle navigating the system?  Should I be nervous about traveling alone at 7 PM?  Or should I suck it up and pay for a cab?

You always want to be aware of your surroundings no matter when you're riding public transportation, but if I were you,  I'd jump on the Orange Line (there's a station in Midway) and take it to the Loop (if your final destination is anywhere north of the Loop, you'd want to get off at State/Lake, which is the northernmost downtown Orange Line stop).  From the Loop, you could take a cab to wherever you're going for a more reasonable price.

i would say its no problem!    there are plenty of signs and good directions to the Orange Line at Midway, and that's a safe, short ride into the Loop.   Once you get to the Loop, you can either walk to your destination, hail a cab, or transfer...    7pm isn't that late around here.   That's when lots of people are still leaving work!

Thanks for the encouragement.  I get a little paranoid when I travel alone!  I'm starting to look forward to the adventure.

LOVE the Orange Line. It's the quickest and probably the nicest CTA line.

It *is* a bit of a haul (walking) from the terminal to the train station at Midway though...just be prepared for that and make sure your luggage easily "lugged".
