Ok, I'm totally going to sound like a grumpy old woman in this post, but I'm okay with that. I have recently seen a trend at first birthday parties where the little one gets their own cake to smash. It's apparently funny? I don't know, I find it really wasteful to see a kid throw around food that could be normally eaten. I probably take my love of social justice a little far, but does anyone else think it's kind of gross to allow your kid to roll around in a cake and waste it? I'm sure there are some kids around the world and even this country who wish they even got a cake on their birthday, let alone one to smash all over their bodies.
Ok, vent over.

I could stand behind this. I have seen entire sheet cakes be the smash cake!
This isn't really a recent thing because my sisters and I each had our own 1st birthday cakes 20+ years ago. I know it's common for some people/areas but I guess I never really understood it either. The only thing I can think of is that people want the cute "baby stuck her finger in the icing" pic but don't want to actually eat the cake after the baby put their hands all over it.
ETA: The cakes we had were small - about twice the size of a cupcake.
This is my friend's baby and his smash cake. I'd probably go a little smaller.

I think its cute, but I've only ever seen it done with very small cakes. Like a 4" round cake. I think its a good idea because it sorta takes the fun out of it for the little one if they don't get to get all messy playing in the cake but no one else would want to eat that cake. I think a smash cupcake can serve this purpose just as well and I've seen that done as well.
DH's cousin is a photographer and she has taken several 1 year old pics with a smash cake where the kid is in a diaper and covered in the cake as they play with it on the floor. That is taking it a little far IMO but the pics sure are adorable.

Yeah, this has been going on for some time. I never had one as a kid (I believe I got to smash a piece of my own cake, while everyone else ate theirs), but I have seen pictures of a friend of mine from HS doing this on her first birthday.
Personally, I would never do it. Nothing grosses me out more than smashed up food. I realize it's the same food, just in smashed form, but blechhhh. I have a hard time with hummus sometimes.

I had one as a baby, as did every sibling and cousin. I don't understand the hang-up on food-covered baby faces.
I'd be ok with letting the kid play with a cupcake or something, but I am not a fan of wasting a whole sheet cake and encouraging the kid to get disgustingly messy. I don't think babies with food all over their faces are cute at all. I find it more gross than anything else.
Same thing with babies dressed up like flowers (think Anne Geddes). Not cute in my opinion.

I think this is where I am at. A small cupcake or tiny cake, fine. I'm not really into messy kids, but if they want to smash their hands in it, I can handle that. But watching a kid throw cake and roll around in it for a few "cute" (or nasty in my opinion) photos just seems wasteful.
I hadn't ever heard of this whole smash cake concept before, but I totally agree with keb. A small cupcake or slice of cake, fine. Anything more than that is just a bigger mess than I want to clean up.
When I started reading the thread, I thought you meant giving the birthday kid a slice of cake (or a cupcake) to eat on his/her own, which usually means they pick it up with their hands and smash it into their faces. I think it's adorable, and I know there's pictures of me and my younger siblings doing it. But we were all confined to our high chairs, and the mess was limited to our own faces/chair trays.
What you are describing (giving a child an entire cake) I have NEVER seen. Can someone post a picture of the (arguably) cute/gross photographs? I'm not sure I'm understanding the concept fully in my head. Are we talking, like, Costco size cakes? Full on wedding cakes? What's the deal?
I can't link or post the pic but go here... http://www.dedeholmanphotography.com/ and click on enter site, then on PURE when it comes up on the right. The last 3 pics are all examples of the professional picture -smash cake deal.

This is what I think of:

I think this is a bit too much cake. And the chocolate frosting can look a little icky.

LOL, this is hilarious. Like the old mama I am, I will just say 'wait til you have kids!!' LMAO.
It's the cutest thing ever actually. I think you may be grossed out because you're seeing the final smashed everywhere product, not the sweet little progression they take from gingerly dipping a finger in to all out "This is delicious and I want it right now!" It's hilarious and so sweet to watch it unfold.
Many bakeries include a tiny 5-inch round 'smash cake' when you order a first birthday cake. We learned with my son though and just gave him a cupcake.
