Recommend your natural sunscreen!
I have a new surgical scar (from ICD implant) that I need to keep sunscreen on this summer (to keep it from turning dark). I don't burn easily, and I don't spend too much time in the sun, so I usually just keep a cheap brand of sunscreen around for beach trips, etc....don't worry too much about ingredients, since I don't use it that often. Since I will be wearing sunscreen on my scar on a regular basis this year, I want to get a good bottle of sunscreen. I want something paraben free, and preferably fragrance-free (I have sensitive skin). There are quite a few natural stores in my town and I'd prefer to get it somewhere local, so more common/popular brands would be nice. Any recommendations?
Re: Recommend your natural sunscreen!
I like my badger. Although the mexitan is nice too. We have badger for our face at 30 and mexitan at 15.
You just have to remember with "natural" sunscreens you need to reapply more often. The mexitan says every hour or so. The badger we did every two. (this is when we went on our friends boat so we were swimming and out in the sun all day.) If it's for all day wear (ie in and out running errands, I'm sure you could go longer but if you are say at the beach or outside all day I'd make sure to reapply often)
The badger will leave a "ghostly" look to your skin because it doesn't completely absorb. We didn't have any other problems with it. aside from remembering to reapply
The mexitan rubs in like a regular lotion sunscreen. The badger is very thick and a little goes a LONG way. I do a thimble-ish size and can do my whole face, ears, and neck.
We bought ours online here.
Yes, that helps! I already do the Vitamin E, and plan to get a good sunscreen. I've only had my ICD for 8 months, so you are giving me hope that it will continue to look better! I survived a cardiac arrest last year, and I'm glad to have the ICD, but I would prefer not to have a bad scar, you know?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
It's not a Green solution really, but I had shoulder surgery in February and now I work at a summer camp and it's very important for me to not have my scars darken (pure vanity). I use Scar Zone with Green Tea. It has SPF 30 in it and works REALLY well. It's only 3.5 months alter and you can barely see my scars!
But of course the best solution is to just cover the scar up when you go out. I usually wear tank tops, but for this summer I've stocked up on sleeved shirts so that I can cover my shoulders when I'm working. Though obviously this will only work if your scar is somewhere easily covered up without getting too hot.
