Etiquette question about ordering at a restaurant

I know it's proper etiquette for the woman to be allowed to order first at a restaurant, but what is the rule when there is more than one lady in attendance?  Does it go by age?  I have been in a few situations where both women have started to place her order first...

Re: Etiquette question about ordering at a restaurant

  • The guest of honor (male or female) always orders first and the host orders last.  In the event that it's a group of women all around the same age and there's no guest of honor or host (i.e. meeting up with friends for lunch), then you go from the first person seated to the server's left around the table.  If you're having something like lunch with your mom and grandmother, your grandmother would order first, followed by your mom, then you.
  • I never knew this, thanks for posting!
  • If it's casual dining, it goes from oldest to youngest.

  • I never gave this any thought.  After years of serving I just liked people to go clockwise from my left.
  • my experience is usually the server  will look the person in the face when s/he wants to hear that persons order. i just wait until it is my turn. if the server doesnt seem to care who orders first, i go by elders first or clockwise by who is closest to the server, like pp stated
