green ways to freeze meat
Hi ladies,
I'm sorry if this question has been asked a billion times. Normally we use plastic Ziploc bags to freeze our beef, chicken, ground turkey, etc. I've been trying to figure out an alternative to that. I've considered glass containers but I'm afraid they'd take up a lot of room in the freezer. Thoughts?
Re: green ways to freeze meat
We use Ziploc's for a lot of our things, too. I *try* to wash and reuse them, but usually Jeff has trashed them by the time I notice. Honestly, though, we don't have a ton of frozen things for us. Most of it is for the dog & cats
Their food gets portioned out into Gladware containers with the lids that stick together. I'd prefer glass, but I haven't seen any that would work for us that don't cost a million dollars. At least the Gladware is BPA free, and they come in flat square containers that are easy to stack.
They've held up pretty well. We've been using the containers for the cats for well over a year without any problems. Jeff has dropped the containers for Nan's food, and they crack when frozen. The lids also seem to crack at the tab that you use to open them. But so far, the containers and lids that have broken have been a wash so we don't have extra random pieces floating around. : )
We have one of those vacuum seal FoodSaver thingies.
Great for freezing meat. You don't buy bags, we buy rolls of this stuff, seal off one end with heat, fill the bag, then vacuum and seal the other side.
You make a custom-sized bag, with a vacuum, so the meat stays really nice.
And, there's something about the ability to make a totally differently sized bag out of the thing that really encourages the wash and reuse in me!
